Toronto Blue Jays vs. Detroit Tigers Predictions: Sunday, July 27th

The Toronto Blue Jays are the hottest team in the majors right now. After winning again yesterday, the Jays are now 8-1 since the All-Star break and 21-5 over the past 26 games. That includes three straight victories over the Detroit Tigers in this series so far.

On the flip side, the Tigers’ losing woes continue. They’ve now lost 12 of their last 13 games coming into today, including a current six-game losing streak. Detroit couldn’t even win last night despite a great Tarik Skubal start.

The law of averages and natural regression would point to the Tigers winning today. However, getting the Blue Jays as underdogs is too good to pass up with the run they’re on. Let’s break it down.

Toronto starter Max Scherzer has a shaky 5.14 ERA through 6 starts this season. Yes, the veteran is a below-average pitcher at this point and leaves a lot to be desired. Still, he gets a favorable matchup here.

The Tigers’ offense is slumping majorly, averaging just 1.8 runs per game since the All-Star break (9 games). In this stretch, Detroit has struggled against right-handed pitching with a .252 wOBA (30th in MLB), 58 wRC+ (30th), .185 BA (30th), and 25.1% K rate (26th) in the split. The entire lineup has gone cold and showing no signs of waking up.

Meanwhile, the Blue Jays are crushing right-handers. In July vs. righties, the offense has a .377 wOBA (1st in MLB), 144 wRC+ (1st), .315 BA (1st), and 15.0% K rate (1st). Over the past week in the split, Toronto has a .383 wOBA (1st) and 148 wRC+ (1st).

The Jays are also averaging 6.3 runs per game since the All-Star break. It’s a tough spot for Detroit starter Jack Flaherty, who has a 4.77 ERA this season. The righty has an ugly 7.79 ERA over his last 7 starts and a 4.66 ERA over his past 4 outings. Opposing pitchers have regularly struggled to quiet Toronto and it doesn’t look like Flaherty has the stuff to do it today.

Philadelphia Phillies vs. New York Yankees Predictions: Sunday, July 27th

The Philadelphia Phillies and New York Yankees wrap up their weekend series with an intriguing Sunday afternoon matchup. The visiting Phillies have comfortably won the first two games by a combined 22-9 scoreline. Let’s see if they can complete the sweep.

Zack Wheeler starts for Philadelphia, which is regularly a good thing. The NL Cy Young contender boasts a 2.39 ERA and 0.88 WHIP this season with many elite advanced stats. He owns a 33.4% strikeout rate (95th percentile), 5.3% walk rate (90th), 34.1% hard-hit rate (89th), .194 xBA (95th), and 2.32 xERA (97th).

Wheeler has been lights out lately with a 1.56 ERA and 2.28 FIP over his past 8 starts. Though he’s more effective at home, the Phillies’ ace also has a 2.89 ERA on the road this year. He’s also been dominant in interleague matchups so far, with a 1.16 ERA and 0.80 WHIP over six starts vs. American League teams.

Bank on Wheeler showing up on the road here. The Yankees have just a .218 batting average against right-handed pitching since the All-Star break (27th in MLB). The offense also just got downgraded with Aaron Judge landing on the Injured List.

On the other side, Carlos Rodon starts for New York. The southpaw has a 3.10 ERA and 1.05 WHIP this season. As impressive as those starts are, though, we can fade him in this spot.

Rodon has been shaky lately with a 4.20 ERA and 4.83 FIP over his last 8 starts. He’s also given up 4+ runs in half of those past 8 outings. Meanwhile, the Phillies have a top-10 offense vs. lefties this month with a .338 wOBA (7th) and 114 wRC+ (7th). They’ve also been upper-tier against left-handers all season with a .322 wOBA (8th) and 104 wRC+ (9th).

Let’s back Philadelphia to finish off the sweep. The Phils are 11-3 in Wheeler’s last 14 starts. Their offense is also rolling right now, averaging 6.5 runs per game since the All-Star break. The Yankees, on the other hand, are slumping with a 3-7 record over the past 10 contests.
