MLB Best Bets for September 7
Detroit Tigers at New York Yankees
Both the Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees offenses are among the league’s worst against right-handed pitching over the past month. When they face southpaws, though, both lineups are notably better. Fortunately for us, the Tigers and Yankees are both starting left-handers tonight – so we’re backing the offenses to have the advantage.
Over the past two weeks, the Yanks have a .364 wOBA and .343 ISO against lefties. They’ll face Tigers starter Eduardo Rodriguez, who’s having a solid season with a 3.11 ERA. He’s also had some shaky outings against other offenses, like the Yankees, that can hit left-handed pitching well. Rodriguez has given up four runs to the Astros and six runs to the Red Sox in the past month. The Yankees offense has also been a lot better lately, averaging 4.7 runs per game over the past 10 contests with 4+ runs scored in 12 of the past 14 games.
The Tigers offense hasn’t been as good, but they still have a .350 wOBA against lefties over the past two weeks. Detroit will face Carlos Rodon, who has a 5.70 ERA and 6.63 FIP this season since returning from injury. Rodon also has a poor 5.64 ERA and 6.98 FIP since the start of August. The New York southpaw simply hasn’t been the same pitcher he was last year for the San Francisco Giants. The Tigers should plate some runs of their own like most opposing lineups have done against Rodon. Take the over here with a pair of offenses in the better half of their splits vs lefties and two pitchers prone to blowup outings.
Pick: Tigers/Yankees OVER 8.5 (-105 on FanDuel)
St. Louis Cardinals at Atlanta Braves
If you had the St. Louis Cardinals winning the first two games of this series against the Atlanta Braves, then all props to you. The Braves’ loss last night actually came as a -335 favorite, which makes them the largest money line favorite to lose outright this MLB season. Even still, we’re going right back to the best team in baseball to avoid the sweep and cover the runline at home.
Adam Wainwright is on the mound for St. Louis and, honestly, you have to feel bad for the veteran pitcher in this spot. Unfortunately, Wino is not going out on top with a rough 8.10 ERA this season. Although he turned back the clock last start against the Padres, the righty was simply bad before that. He pitched to a 10.52 ERA over his previous six starts with at least six runs allowed in three of four starts prior to his latest outing. The Braves should get to him here. They have been the best offense in the MLB against right-handed pitching all season and boast a .348 wOBA and .232 ISO in the split over the past two weeks.
Meanwhile, Braves starter Max Fried should do enough to limit the Cardinals offense. Fried has a strong 2.86 ERA and 2.88 FIP over his past six starts since returning from injury. The Braves have also gone 5-1 in his past six outings, winning by 2+ runs in four of those. Over the past two weeks, the Cards have just a .273 wOBA against left-handed pitching (2nd-worst in MLB). St. Louis has been much better vs righties than lefties all year as well.
Another interesting wrinkle for tonight’s matchup is that the Braves haven’t been swept in a three or four-game series since May – and that was on the road against the Toronto Blue Jays. When Atlanta previously lost the first two games of a three-game series, it rebounded to not only win but also cover the 1.5 runline in both of the last two instances. Even though this runline is pricey, take the Braves to win by 2+ tonight. You can also look at the 2.5 alt-runline at even money.
Pick: Atlanta Braves -1.5 Runline (-170 on DraftKings)
