CFB Picks, Predictions & Best Bets: Thursday, 11/6

Thursday’s Week 11 slate features a pair of games. Let’s focus on one of those as App State hosts Georgia Southern in the Sun Belt. The Mountaineers are 6.5-point favorites with a 62.5 over/under. Let’s break it down to begin our CFB picks.

Georgia Southern vs. App State Prediction: Thursday, November 6th

Both of these Sun Belt teams come in limping ahead of Thursday night’s game. Georgia Southern has lost 3 of its last 4 games with a 3-5 record on the season. App State, meanwhile, has lost 4 of its last 6 games. Instead of looking at the spread or game total, let’s focus on the Mountaineers’ team total.

App State should put up points in this matchup, regardless of whether it wins or loses. The Mountaineers are averaging 30.3 PPG in conference play, including 41 and 37 points in two of their last three games. More notably, they take on a struggling defense at home this week.

Georgia Southern has one of the worst defenses in college football. The Eagles are allowing 35.4 PPG this season (128th in FBS) and 452.6 total yards per contest (129th). They also rank 135th in the country in defensive EPA/Play and 136th in defensive success rate. GSU has given up at least 34 points in 6 of 8 games so far as well.

It’s a great matchup for App State to bounce back offensively after being held to 21 points in a loss at Old Dominion last game. Georgia Southern is bad against both the run and the pass. It ranks 132nd in EPA/Pass and 134th in EPA/Rush defensively. The Mountaineers, meanwhile, have the balanced offense to take advantage.

This game has a high total, and Appalachian State should pace the scoring. It also helps that App State’s subpar pass defense can allow Georgia Southern to move the ball, too. That’ll likely force the Mountaineers to continue scoring in the second half.

CFB Picks, Predictions & Best Bets: Friday, 11/7

Let’s turn our attention to Friday’s slate for our CFB best bets. Memphis hosts Tulane in an American Athletic Conference matchup, with the Tigers as 4.5-point home favorites. It’s time to dive into more CFB predictions.

Tulane vs. Memphis Prediction: Friday, November 7th

This game has massive league and postseason implications. The winner would likely be in the driver’s seat for both the AAC title and the Group of 5 bid for the College Football Playoff. Instead of picking a side, though, let’s focus on the total and count on a higher-scoring matchup.

Memphis boasts one of the more potent offenses in the country. The Tigers are averaging 37.7 PPG this year (12th in FBS) while putting up 429.8 total yards of offense per game (36th). They also rank 16th nationally in offensive EPA/Play and 17th in offensive success rate.

The Memphis offense has also gotten back on track over the past two weeks since QB Brendon Lewis returned from injury. The Tigers scored 34 points in a win over South Florida and then 38 points in last week’s victory over Rice. They now return home, where they’re averaging 39.0 PPG this year.

Meanwhile, Tulane is allowing 34.5 PPG on the road this season. The Green Wave defense was also just gashed for 48 points and 523 total yards on the road at UTSA last week. They especially struggle against the run, ranking 89th in both rushing yards allowed per game and EPA/Rush defensively. That’s a problem against Memphis’ elite run game. The Tigers rank 20th nationally in yards per carry, 5th in EPA/Rush, and 7th in rushing success rate.

On the other side, Tulane should also have some success on offense to keep this a back-and-forth contest. Memphis ranks 78th in the country in passing yards allowed per game vs. FBS opponents this year. The defense is also 91st in total EPA against the pass.

That’s good news for the Green Wave passing attack. Tulane’s offense comes in at 26th in EPA/Pass and 29th in passing success rate. Dual-threat QB Jake Retzlaff is at his best when both his arm and legs are stretching defenses. Look for a bounce-back effort after he threw for just 194 yards with 2 interceptions last week.
