2023 Player Outlook

2023 Recap: Through his first 10 starts of the season, Matz was 0-6 with a 5.72 ERA, .322 BAA, and 1.75 WHIP. He then moved to the bullpen, where his numbers vastly improved. Then, the team moved him back to a starter, and across his final seven starts before heading to the injured list, he posted a 1.86 ERA, .188 BAA, and 0.88 WHIP! In fact, over his final seven starts, he posted an 11.4 percent swinging strike rate, 36.8 percent O-Swing rate, and was doing a far better job of getting ahead of opposing hitters.

2024 Outlook: The veteran southpaw is a guarantee for an IL stint on a yearly basis, and he could give fantasy managers a quality 120-130 innings in 2024. His ERA will hover around 4.00, and as long he can continue to generate ground balls more than 40 percent of the time, he should fare just fine as a late round starter in NL-only formats, albeit one with a lower ceiling.
