The Week That Was Football: The Injuries From Week 13

Big name injuries highlight this week’s Football Week That Was.

For 2014, The Week that Was: NFL will focus on injuries and their effects.

DeSean Jackson:    DeSean Jackson left Sunday’s game with an ankle injury.  As of this writing, the severity of the injury is not clear.  It is being called a fibula contusion so it is possible he could play next week.  Before leaving the game Sunday, Jackson caught five passes for 84 yards and a TD.  Jackson seems to have a good rapport with Colt McCoy so it would be a shame for DJax and his fantasy owners if he had to miss time – especially during the fantasy playoffs.  If DJax is out, perhaps there will be a Pierre Garcon sighting?  [Note: The Rams D is a great play against Washington with or without DJax next week].

Zach Mettenberger:   Zach Mettenberger left Sunday’s game against the Texans with a with an AC joint sprain in his throwing shoulder.  Mettenberger was a popular cheap QB option for many the past couple of weeks but his 184 yards with one touchdown and one interception Sunday leaves many disappointed.  Zach says he plans on playing next week but I would not count on it.  Why would the Titans risk it?  If Zach is out, upgrade Kendall Wright as Jake Locker and Wright seem to have a nice connection.

Jordan Reed:   Jordan Reed stayed healthy for an entire game.  That in and of itself is big news!  Reed, who puts the frag in fragile, was very effective, reeling in 9 passes on 11 targets for 123 yards.  If you are comfortable with risk, Reed is a great high risk high reward TE for those who do not own Graham or Gronk.  Oh, and if DJax misses next week’s game, Reed will become McCoy’s number 1 target.  One has to be bold to win in the fantasy football playoffs and rolling with Reed is just such a bold move.

Andre EllingtonAndre Ellington left Sunday's game with a hip injury reports are now calling a hip pointer and did not return.  This was a really bad break for fantasy owners as Ellington had a tasty matchup against the hapless Falcons run defense.  Marion Grice seemed to be the number 1 back after Ellington left but did not get that many carries so it is hard to know.  Those in deep leagues need to monitor the situation should Ellington miss time during the fantasy playoffs.  Those who own Ellington need to grab Grice just in case.

Rashad Jennings:  Rashad Jennings suffered an ankle injury Sunday but not before a big game in which he carried the ball 26 times for 91 yards, scored two touchdowns and also caught three passes on five targets.  When on the field, Jennings has been a true RB1 in fantasy.  Hopefully he will be able to go next week.  If not, Andre Williams will get the start.  Williams will be a guy you will likely start in deep leagues should Jennings be out but do not get too excited as Williams has no elusiveness and is a liability out of the backfield in the passing game.

Justin Hunter:  According to reports, Justin hunter suffered a lacerated spleen in Sunday’s game.  This is the same injury Jason Witten suffered a couple of years back.  Witten did not miss a game but few are as tough as Witten.  Moreover, the Titans have no reason to risk Hunter’s health at this point in the season no matter how tough Hunter may be.  So, I doubt you see Hunter for a couple of weeks if at all during the remainder of 2014.  Even if you did, with Locker at QB, Hunter’s value, such as it is, falls even further.  Move along.

Roddy White  Roddy White sat out Sunday’s match with the Cardinals with his ankle injury.  Tough break for White and his fantasy owners as Roddy had 17 receptions on 22 targets in his last two games.  Starting in his place, Harry Douglass reeled in 9 passes for 116 yards.  While playing in Green Bay next week is not ideal, Douglass is still a start if Roddy sits again.
