Mets second baseman Robinson Cano and Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. are set to debut Sunday with Estrellas Orientales in the first game of a best-of-three series against the Leones del Escogido in the Dominican Winter League playoffs.

It will likely be the only competitive baseball Cano plays for quite a while, since he’s been suspended without pay for the entire upcoming 2021 season after testing positive for the performance-enhancing drug Stanozolol, an anabolic steroid derived from dihydrotestosterone, last month. It was his second career PED-related suspension. The 38-year-old second baseman will forfeit his entire $24 million salary for the impending season, but remains on the Mets’ books for a combined $48 million for the 2022 and 2023 campaigns. Meanwhile, Tatis Jr. has blossomed into one of the brightest young stars in the game, finishing fourth in the NL MVP race this past season. He'll take his immense talents back to the Dominican League playoffs, where he led the Estrellas to a Winter League title two years ago, in a brief tune-up before spring training.
