Pirates outfielder Gregory Polanco will not participate in the upcoming Dominican Winter League playoffs with Leones del Escogido due to a fractured right wrist.

According to Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Polanco sustained a “small, non-displaced fracture of the triquetrum bone" in his right wrist. He's expected to avoid surgery and be ready to resume baseball activities by the start of spring training. Even if he’s healthy in time for camp, it’s a serious injury that could have a colossal impact on Polanco’s performance next season. The 29-year-old corner outfielder recorded a disastrous .153/.214/.325 triple-slash line with seven homers across 174 plate appearances last season and is entering the final year of a five-year, $36 million extension that he signed back in 2016. It’s another significant development in a turbulent offseason for the Pirates, who appear to be in the opening salvo of a full-scale teardown after jettisoning slugger Josh Bell earlier this week.
