Trey Hendrickson Reports to Bengals Camp
After holding out for the entirety of the Bengals' offseason program, superstar edge rusher Trey Hendrickson has reported to Bengals training camp for the first time today. Hendrickson has been looking for a new contract this offseason, as he is set to only make $16 million after leading the league in sacks last season with 17.5. Fellow AFC North pass rusher T.J. Watt was just extended to a three-year, $123 million deal this offseason, which made him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history. Seeing as they are the same age and have had similar production over the past few seasons, Hendrickson may be looking for a similar deal.
While Hendrickson did rejoin the team at camp today, he is still just “holding in” and is not practicing with the team until he reaches an agreement on a new deal, which may take some time. When asked about the progress towards a new deal, Hendrickson noted that things are in the same place as they were prior.
GM John Schneider Extended
While some players may still be waiting on their extension, Seattle Seahawks General Manager John Schneider didn't need to wait long after seeing his team in action on the practice field. John Schneider agreed to a four-year extension, keeping him in Seattle through the rest of the decade. Scheider originally faced some backlash this offseason when trading away franchise pieces in quarterback Geno Smith and wide receiver DK Metcalf, but still has the trust of ownership with his quick retooling work, as he remained active in free agency and brought in a very impressive NFL draft haul.
Scheider has been with Seattle since 2010 and has played an instrumental part in building some impressive rosters, including one of the most notorious defenses of all time, the “Legion of Boom.” Schneider's Seahawks team also appeared in back-to-back Super Bowls in 2013 and 2014, winning one of them over Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos.
Last season, the Seahawks missed the playoffs barely, with an impressive 10-7 record, and are looking to make some noise in the postseason once again.
Anthony Richardson vs. Daniel Jones: Colts QB Battle is “Neck and Neck”
One of the bigger surprises in our NFL Training Camp Updates has been how close the quarterback battle has been for the Indianapolis Colts. Every day, new clips of Anthony Richardson highlights have been surfacing, as he has reworked his throwing mechanics, and Daniel Jones has reportedly picked up the offense very quickly. Head coach Shane Steichen is currently considering the quarterback battle “neck and neck.”
Meanwhile, an unexpected quarterback battle has been taking place in New Orleans, as the Saints have been splitting first-team reps between three different quarterbacks: rookie Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattler, and Jake Haener. While it was believed that Shough would be QB1 after being selected with the 40th overall pick in the NFL Draft back in April, Rattler and Haener have both been competing and impressing their teammates and the Saints staff. Today, it was Haener taking the majority of first-team reps.
DJ Moore Taking Snaps at Running Back
Since the Chicago Bears brought in offensive guru Ben Johnson to be their next head coach, they were expecting some new and exciting wrinkles to their formerly stale offense. One of which is putting their players and their entire offense in the best positions to succeed, meaning DJ Moore will get the ball in his hands, no matter what.
Ben Johnson has been known for his creativity in the backfield, helping running backs like Jamaal Williams, Jahmyr Gibbs, and David Montgomery reach their full potential. That is why the Bears are excited to get DJ Moore in the backfield, in addition to his role as a wide receiver. Johnson noted that Moore is a “physical, run-after-catch, just-get-me-the-ball type of guy,” so he wanted to get the ball in his hands no matter what. Moore will join a backfield featuring the shifty DAndre Swift (who was notably with Coach Johnson in Detroit back in 2022), the powerful Roschon Johnson, and seventh-round rookie Kyle Monangai.
Cameron Ward Update
Perhaps the least talked-about first overall pick in the modern era, Cameron Ward has quietly been putting on an impressive camp for the Tennessee Titans. Former starting quarterback Will Levis recently underwent shoulder surgery, so Ward has been able to take on the QB1 role uncontested. Before leaving practice with an apparent injury today, Wards WR1 Calvin Ridley was able to make this catch after some impressive route running.
Ward acknowledges that as a first overall pick, he might not be as welcomed into the league as most and that there is a “target on his back,” but he is still working to earn the trust and respect of his teammates.
NFL Training Camp Injury Update & Transactions: Zack Moss Released
On top of all of our NFL Training Camp Updates on the field, plenty of news happened off the field as well. Check out our NFL Training Camp Injury Update & Transactions:
Zack Moss Released
After suffering a season-ending neck injury last year, the Cincinnati Bengals have released running back Zack Moss. Moss began the 2024 season as the Bengals' RB1 with six starts on the season, before fellow running back Chase Brown had his breakout. The Bengals will likely now turn to rookie Tahj Brooks to join Brown in the backfield and fill the shoes Moss is leaving behind.
Kader Kohou & Ashtyn Davis Injury Update
The Dolphins' thin secondary just got thinner. Cornerback Kader Kohou suffered a knee injury during Saturday's practice that was just confirmed to be an ACL tear and is now out for the season. Meanwhile, safety Ashtyn Davis suffered a non-contact leg injury yesterday and is expected to miss significant time, but not the entire season. The Dolphins will now look to an entirely new secondary compared to their 2024 group to take the reins in the 2025 season.
Jordan Whitehead Injury Update
After suffering a severe neck injury last season from a car accident, safety Jordan Whitehead has officially received full medical clearance to return to football. The free agent visited the Atlanta Falcons today in search of his next opportunity after spending his career with the New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers thus far.
Maxwell Hairston Injury Update
After having to leave yesterday's practice early with an apparent knee injury, the Buffalo Bills' coaching staff is relieved that their number one draft pick in April's NFL draft, Maxwell Hairston, avoided an ACL tear. He is currently dealing with an LCL sprain and could be back at practice in as soon as three weeks.
Other Notable Injury Updates
- Isaiah Likely: After being carted off the field during yesterday's practice, Likely was able to avoid the worst, suffering a small foot fracture rather than a major injury. He will undergo surgery that will need a six-week recovery time, but Likely could still be back for Week One.
- Matthew Stafford: Despite being expected to return to practice by now, Rams Quarterback Matthew Stafford is still sidelined with a shoulder injury, but is not expected to miss any time in the regular season, according to head coach Sean McVay.
- Najee Harris: After suffering an eye injury in an incident that took place around the Fourth of July, Najee Harris still remains sidelined and does not have a timetable to return to practice, according to head coach Jim Harbaugh.
- Hunter Renfrow & Mike Jackson: Two Carolina Panthers exited practice with injury today, including cornerback Mike Jackson, who is dealing with a sprained toe, and wide receiver Hunter Renfrow, who is dealing with a “tweaked hamstring,” according to head coach Dave Canales
- Kyonte Hamilton: Houston Texans rookie defensive tackle Kyonte Hamilton had to be carted off the field after suffering an apparent injury in today's practice.
- Juwan Johnson: According to head coach Kellen Moore, Saints tight end Juwan Johnson suffered an undisclosed injury during today's practice
- Xavier Worthy: After what head coach Andy Reid cited as “banging his head,” wide receiver Xavier Worthy has entered concussion protocol.
