Right as the NFL regular season was getting underway, I wrote an article about playing the season-long salary cap game over at Head2Head Sports. In addition to just giving you the lowdown, I also said that I would track my lineup and strategies used in an effort to help you along more, whether you were playing right now or thinking about joining up in the future. So with that, I’d like to live up to my promise and update you through my first two weeks.
As a reminder, here was my lineup for Week 1:

The key component here was the use of a second quarterback in the flex position. Whenever I play in a superflex league, I go with two quarterbacks. No question. Even your worst quarterback, on the whole, scores better than almost any other skill position player around. You may as well call it a 2-QB league and be done with it, but after an intriguing debate with the First Lady of Fantasy Sports and Queen Badass at Head2Head, Stacie Stern, I was shown a glimpse of the light and am now only 98% sure I will go with two quarterbacks week in and week out.
The only issue, and this is where Stacie’s argument holds up best, is the cost of quarterbacks here. Even your cheapest signal-caller – this week it’s Dak Prescott – is still $12M. Using two quarterbacks puts a major crimp on your budget and you better be sure that your low-cost “sleeper” picks pan out for the week. If they don’t, your overall points total is going to suffer after a while.
For this lineup, Tyler Kroft was really my only letdown as even picks like Josh Lambo, T.J. Yeldon, Frank Gore managed to post in the 9-15 points range. My big boost obviously came from Spencer Ware and he was properly supported by my two quarterbacks. That helped me withstand the struggles of Sammy Watkins and the Chiefs defense which enabled me to beat my opponent for the week 149-124.
It was a solid victory and it got me off on the right foot with regard to the head-to-head record, but my points total looked grim in comparison to some of the others. In fact, it was the second-lowest total points of any team that won its match-up and frankly, that’s just not good. Low totals like that may be okay to get away with a win for the week, but they certainly aren’t going to do me justice in the long run.
In looking at a number of the lineups from the top of the points leaderboard, the majority of players did not go with the second quarterback and instead went with a more well-rounded group of running backs and receivers. Was Stacie right? Was I being too stuck in my ways? Well, there was only one way to find out and here’s what my lineup looked like for Week 2:

Well, I won my game, but again, scored just 147 points. That actually put me in the middle of the pack in points for my league, but who didn’t bite on the Giants/Saints game this past week and get burned. The return values for both Odell Beckham and Brandin Cooks were garbage. If it wasn’t for David Carr, DeAngelo Williams and, funny enough, the Ravens defense, I would have lost, though my opponent also bit on OBJ and instead of Cooks, Willie Snead.
Considering I’m 2-0 at this point, and given what I’ve seen others atop the leaderboard do for player selection, I’m going to give the single-QB lineup another shot. I threw down $90 for 50 trades knowing that I was likely to deconstruct my lineup on more than one occasion, so I have a number of things I can do this week. The first step is going to be looking through the bargain bin. Last week I went with Robert Woods because Watkins was supposed to be out and there wasn’t anyone in that price range to which I could pivot so I may have to look in a slightly higher cost bracket. If I can continue with a stars-and- scrubs strategy, I will, though again, very gun shy after this week’s supposed can’t miss game. We’ve got Saints/Falcons on Monday night though so the temptation might be too great. Maybe I resist and create a more balanced lineup? Seems like it’s working for some.
I don’t know. We’ll just have to see what I did next week. Can my quest for the undefeated season continue?
