Memorial Day Weekend is behind us and we have officially turned the calendar to June.  It is no longer considered early in the baseball season so decisions need to be made regarding your fantasy rosters.  Nagging injuries are wreaking havoc on GMs who have to waste valuable roster space and make critical lineup decisions with players who are technically active but held out for extended absences nursing injuries.  Without any further ado, here is the next edition of the walking wounded.

Bryce Harper (OF-WAS)

Harper was not having fun on Monday when he was hit by a pitch and suffered a contusion on his right knee.  He was held out of the lineup on Tuesday against Philadelphia but should be back immediately assuming there is no swelling.  Either way this will not be an extended absence so plan on putting the 2015 MVP back in your daily lineup in short order.  It’s been a struggle for Harper so far batting just .242, but don’t ask any clown questions and just be patient.

Giancarlo Stanton (OF-MIA)

The Marlins slugger has been one of the biggest fantasy busts of the season and has now missed seven straight games with an injury to his right side.  It doesn’t appear he will be sent to the DL because Miami seems to think he is close to returning.  Stanton has been an immense disappointment thus far batting just .214 with 61 strikeouts thus far.  He does have 12 home runs but only 26 RBI.  Health issues continue to ravage Stanton’s career as he is quickly approaching Troy Tulowitzki status.

Yasiel Puig (OF-LAD)

Puig is dealing with a sore left hamstring and was scratched from the Dodgers lineup on Tuesday.  He already has a history of hamstring issues in his young career so this is yet another chapter in fantasy GMs’ frustration over the Cuban sensation.  With a .239 batting average and just five home runs, Puig is merely a bit player on fantasy teams and someone who won’t be missed very much while he nurses his latest injury.

Kenta Maeda (SP-LAD)

Maeda has been impressive in his inaugural season in the United States compiling a 4-3 record with a 3.00 ERA and 1.05 WHIP through ten starts.  He was hit in the right hand by a comebacker last weekend and has continued to experience some swelling which places his next start in jeopardy.  He is scheduled to face the Cubs on Thursday so check back in by then for an update on his status because chances are Los Angeles will want to be cautious with their investment.

Salvador Perez (C-KC)

Perez was involved in a collision over the weekend and suffered a quad injury which has kept him sidelined for the past few days.  He’s expected to miss at least a few more games as he recovers from the contusion and should hopefully avoid a stint on the disabled list.  There is no structural damage so it is just a matter of getting him enough rest, keeping the swelling down and managing his pain tolerance.  Neither of the Royals other catching options are worth adding so just ride it out with Perez on the sidelines for another couple days.

David Wright (3B-NYM)

The sad story of the Mets captain continues as David Wright has been diagnosed with a herniated disk in his neck.  This is a separate injury from his spinal stenosis, but it raises concerns about how fragile he has become and susceptible to other ailments.  The Mets announced that Wright will have a pain-killing injection in the hopes that he can avoid the disabled list.  Even if Wright manages to avoid the DL, he is hardly worth playing in anything but an NL-only league due to his diminished skills and offensive output.

Shelby Miller (SP-ARZ)

Arizona has granted mercy to Miller and fantasy GMs by placing him on the DL with lingering issues with a finger injury he suffered several weeks ago.  Miller was acquired by the Diamondbacks for the former first overall pick in the draft, so expectations were high coming into 2016.  However, Miller has been an absolute disaster going 1-6 with an atrocious 7.09 ERA and 1.86 WHIP through 10 starts.  Arizona is likely not in a rush to bring Miller back, so only hold onto him if you have sufficient roster space or DL slots available for stashing.

Brandon Phillips (2B-CIN)

Phillips is considered day-to-day with a sore left foot and was scratched from the Reds lineup on Tuesday.  The timing couldn’t be worse because Cincinnati is playing at Coors Field this week.  Check back in later on Wednesday for an update on his status and whether he is able to return to the lineup.

Dustin Ackley (2B-NYY)

Ackley suffered a torn right labrum and will require season-ending surgery.  He was merely a part-time player and only held fantasy value in AL-only leagues due to his eligibility at multiple positions.  He should be dropped in all league formats.
