The month of May is almost over and now is the time to really take stock in your rosters.  By now, the players who started off red hot have cooled off and the players who started ice cold have heated up.  But the one constant over the first eight and a half weeks of the 2015 season is the continuous rash of injuries that have plagued GM’s.  Not only should you be managing the waiver wire, but you should also start thinking about making some deals to compensate for those injuries.  So without further adieu, here is the next installment of the walking wounded.

Johnny Cueto (SP-CIN)

The Reds are hopeful that Johnny Cueto will be able to return this Sunday if his next bullpen session goes well.  Cueto dodged a bullet avoiding any structural damage in his elbow, but the way the Reds have handled injuries this season is reason enough to be skeptical.  Cueto is a free agent at the end of the year so either the Reds want him back on the mound to help turn their own fortunes around or showcase him for a prospective trade.  Even if he does come back this weekend you should still closely watch Cueto because this may not be the last time he is injured this year.

Matt Adams (1B-STL)

Adams sustained a torn right quadriceps earlier this week and will be undergoing surgery to repair the muscle.  He will miss three to four months, but it is entirely plausible that he is done for the season.  Adams has struggled most of the season with only four home runs, but now he can be dropped in redraft leagues.  Look for Mark Reynolds to see most of the at bats at first base for St. Louis unless they go out on the trade market and make a deal for someone like Ryan Howard.

Avisail Garcia (OF-CHW)

The White Sox are being cautious with Avisail Garcia who has been out since Monday with a knee injury.  Garcia is a solid young hitter but has dealt with a variety of injuries throughout his short career.  It does not appear as though a stint on the disabled list is warranted, but fantasy GM’s need to check back before game time on Friday to see whether he is back in the lineup.

Scott Kazmir (SP-OAK)

The A’s announced that Scott Kazmir will likely have his next start skipped due to a shoulder injury.  An MRI did not reveal any structural damage which is a positive development.  However, Kazmir does have a lengthy history of injuries so there is some cause for concern.  He has pitched very well for Oakland with a solid 2.93 ERA and almost one strikeout per inning despite just a 2-3 record.  Leave him on your bench for Week 9.

Jayson Werth (OF-WAS)

The news went from bad to worse for Jayson Werth who is on the disabled list with a wrist injury sustained after being hit by a pitch a couple weeks ago.  He underwent a CT scan which revealed two fractures and will keep him sidelined until August.  Werth was awful in the 27 games he did play this season and is not worth (yes, an intentional pun) holding onto unless your league has a lot of available DL slots.

Xander Bogaerts (SS-BOS)

Bogaerts was hit by a pitch on his left forearm on Thursday and has been diagnosed with a bone bruise.  He will probably miss at least one game while recovering, but the good news is that he avoided any type of serious injury.

Devin Mesoraco (C-CIN)

The Reds finally put fantasy GM’s out of their misery by placing Mesoraco on the disabled list due to a hip injury.  It is quite possible that Mesoraco will undergo season-ending surgery but that decision still has yet to be made.  He came into the season as one of the top offensive catchers in the league, but Mesoraco was limited to only 45 at bats before finally being shut down.  He can be dropped in redraft leagues.

Danny Duffy (SP-KC)

Duffy landed on the disabled list earlier this week with a biceps injury but has already played catch and is scheduled to throw a bullpen session.  His 5.87 ERA and 1.70 WHIP through eight starts have not warranted much faith in him, but he could be back sooner rather than later.  Wait for him to prove he is healthy before jumping on the waiver wire to grab him.

Michael Morse (1B-MIA)

Morse has been a major disappointment since signing with the Marlins with just a .211 batting average and two home runs.  He is dealing with a finger injury on his right hand and was placed on the disabled list retroactive to May 24.  Morse was borderline rosterable before the injury, but now there is little reason to stash him except in shallow NL-only leagues.
