PGA DFS Coverage for the Valspar Championship

We continue to make the rounds in the sunshine state for the Valspar Championship.  The players leave the eastern coastline of Florida for the Gulf of Mexico.  This nearly four hour drive lands the players at the Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club.  This course will take a big bite out of these players, especially the holes affectionately known as the “Snake Pit”.  While the field strength drops off this weekend, the 14th ranked player in the world Sam Burns leads this field as the back to back champion.

The Field: Valspar Championship

Sam Burns comes into this event as the 2021 and 2022 champion of the Valspar.  He attempts to become the first player on the PGA Tour since Steve Stricker at the John Deere between 2009-2011 to win an event three years in a row.  This is not one of the “designated events” which means the field strength is not what we’ve seen over the last two weeks.  We do have the reigning PGA Champion Justin Thomas and reigning U.S. Open Champion Matthew Fitzpatrick, along with Jordan Spieth, Keegan Bradley and Justin Rose in the field.  We will also see a lot of the Korn Ferry graduates from last season.  .

The Course: Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club

We’ve got a unique Par 71 format this weekend in Palm Harbor.  Typically, Par 71’s only have three Par 5’s but we will see five Par 3’s, one less Par 4 and four Par 5’s.  The Par 3’s are all around 200 yards or longer.  We will see what we’ve seen throughout this Florida swing, lots of water and narrow tree lined fairways.  The length is pretty average on the PGA Tour these days sitting at 7,340 yards.  The big bombers will be forced to club down as driving distance is not at a premium this weekend.  The greens are protected by bunkers, so scrambling and sand saves will be critical to success.  I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t at least mention the holes called “The Snake Pit”.  Holes 16 thru 18 feature water on nearly every full shot which will force these players into making smart decisions.  If you take out Sam Burns’ last two wins at 17 under par, between 2012-2019 no one cleared 14 under par.

The Weather: Palm Harbor, Florida

We should see temperatures in the upper 70s on Thursday and Friday with sunny skies but things go downhill over the weekend.  We will see thunderstorms throughout the day on Saturday and more showers to follow on Sunday.  These conditions will obviously cause wet conditions and likely multiple stops in play.  We could even see a Monday finish if this forecast holds true..
