NFL Underdog Fantasy Top Picks
Week 3 Monday Night Football Picks
A.J. Brown, Philadelphia Eagles – HIGHER than 68.5 Receiving Yards
Last week against the Vikings, A.J. Brown was relatively quiet with four receptions for just 29 yards. It was one of his worst yardage totals with the Philadelphia Eagles. TV cameras also showed Brown visibly upset in a sideline discussion with Jalen Hurts. Although he denied it afterward, Brown was likely unhappy with his lack of involvement in the Eagles offense last week. Well, let’s bank on that changing in primetime as Hurts finds him early and often.
Brown is more than capable of putting up 70+ receiving yards when he gets the targets. He had 79 yards and seven catches on 10 targets in Week 1 and we could see something similar or better tonight. Brown had at least 69 receiving yards in 10 of 17 regular-season games last year and had 67 yards in another, while averaging 88 yards per game. Meanwhile, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense has been much better against the run (54 YPG) than the pass (248.5 YPG) this season. The Bucs also gave up big games to Justin Jefferson in Week 1 (150 yards) and DJ Moore in Week 2 (104 yards). Though the Eagles have two top-tier wideouts in Brown and DeVonta Smith, the former is the “squeaky wheel” right now and could ball out on MNF.
Let's also not forget that Brown's Week 2 performance could've looked a lot better than those 29 yards suggest. He had a TD called back and another target that could've been a TD catch but was grabbed from behind with no penalty called.
Joe Mixon, Cincinnati Bengals – HIGHER than 14.5 Rushing Attempts
The big question mark for the Cincinnati Bengals tonight is whether or not Joe Burrow will play. A report this morning said there’s “optimism” he’s “trending in the right direction,” but the Bengals also signed AJ McCarron and Reid Sinnett to their practice squad ahead of tonight’s game. Either way, we can expect Burrow to be limited with his calf injury if he does suit up. If he sits, well, the Bengals’ passing game gets a significant downgrade with Jake Browning under center instead.
Put it all together and we should see a heavy dose of Joe Mixon and the run game here. Mixon saw 13 carries in both of the first two games this season. The Bengals would be smart to give him more work as he’s averaging over 4.0 yards per carry and has been the most reliable part of the offense so far. In Week 1, Mixon got his 13 rush attempts despite Cincy playing from behind. In Week 2, he got 13 despite Burrow throwing it 41 times. If we envision Burrow not dropping back to pass as much tonight or the offense leaning on the run more with him out, then Mixon’s carries have to rise.
He had at least 15 rush attempts in six of 14 regular-season games last year and averaged 15 carries per week. In 2021, Mixon had 15+ rush attempts in 11 of 16 regular-season games and averaged 18.3 carries. Since he had fewer than 15 in both of the first two games, those trends would also suggest a slightly bigger workload coming in Week 3. The Los Angeles Rams rush defense has been shaky, giving up 116 yards on 20 carries to Christian McCaffrey last week on a 5.8 YPC. In Week 1, Seahawks RB Kenneth Walker averaged 5.3 YPC with his 64 yards on 12 attempts. Finally, Mixon is the clear workhorse in the Bengals backfield with Chase Brown and TreVeyon Williams only getting a touch or two per game.
