Underdog Fantasy MLB Picks: Saturday, 5/16

Bryce Elder MLB Underdog Fantasy Pick: Higher than 5.5 Strikeouts

Bryce Elder is a high-value play on today’s board for your Underdog MLB Picks. Elder is missing bats at a 24.4 percent clip and faces a Boston lineup that currently ranks as the 10th-most frequent strikeout target for right-handers. Our MLB DFS Projections show a high ceiling for Elder today. With his secondary stuff leading to nearly a strikeout per inning, taking the Higher on a 5.5 line is a statistically sharp move for your entries.

Logan Gilbert MLB Underdog Fantasy Pick: Higher Than 5.5 Strikeouts

Logan Gilbert is coming off his best start of the season, tossing six scoreless innings with nine strikeouts. Let’s hope he carries that over into Saturday’s home outing against the San Diego Padres. At the very least, the Seattle Mariners’ right-hander can tally some strikeouts in this matchup.

The Padres have been striking out a ton lately. Over the past two weeks, they have a 27.6% strikeout rate, which is the second-highest mark in the majors. They also have a woeful .191 team batting average in this stretch, which is the second-lowest. Plus, the Padres have a league-high 30.6% K rate vs. right-handers over the last week of games.

It’s a great spot for Gilbert, who will benefit from pitching at home. Last year, he notched a whopping 38.8% strikeout rate and 2.45 FIP at home, compared to a 26.2% K rate and 4.33 FIP on the road. He has six or more strikeouts in five of nine starts so far this year, and seven or more punchouts in three of his last six outings.

Gilbert does an excellent job of avoiding walks, which gives him more strikeout upside in matchups like this one. San Diego also has the league’s seventh-highest strikeout rate on the road this year (25.2%).
