Stacks for Sunday, July 9

O’s @ Twins

I like the idea of full stacking a game between Ubaldo Jimenez and Kyle Gibson.  They both come in with losing records, and ERA’s at 6.64 and 5.82.  Ubaldo last just four innings, allowing six earned runs vs the Twins back in May when the O’s lost 14-7.  Outside of a rare good start vs Toronto, he has allowed at least two homers in his last three games.  One of the reasons why is that hitters have chased just 14 of Ubaldo Jimenez's 78 breaking balls down out of the zone (chase rate of 17.9%) as a starter this season (Rank: 160th of 164 qualified SPs in MLB; League Avg: 36.3%), and Twins hitters have chased just 25.9% of pitches out of the zone versus RHP this season (Rank: 2nd of 30 in MLB; League Avg: 29.2%).

Gibson received the win in that 14-7 win vs Ubaldo back in May, but also allowed six earned runs of his own that game.  For you narrative players, he allowed another six runs five starts later in a June start, and today will be Gibson’s fifth start since then.  Gibson has allowed at least one homer in five straight, and has a strikeout rate of just 8.2% (8/97) with RISP this season (Rank: 154th of 157 qualified SPs in MLB; League Avg: 20.0%).  Orioles hitters have 28 HRs in 586 ABs (20.9 AB/HR) with RISP this season (Rank: 2nd of 30 in MLB; League Avg: 28.9)

O’s:    Manny Machado, Seth Smith, Mark Trumbo, Trey Mancini

Twins:  Brian Dozier, Miguel Sano, Max Kepler, Jason Castro

Padres

The Padres continue to be a hit or two away from really putting together solid run totals.  If looking for a low owned or cheap stack option, they face Jerad Eickhoff with the Phillies today.  Eickhoff is 0-7 on the season with a 4.93 ERA.  He hasn’t pitched since June 20th, and threw 57 pitches in a rehab start.  He’s allowed at least four runs in six of his last ten starts as well.

A main reason to target the Padres would be to pair them with the Nationals to complete the weekend stack, or a perfect spot for a Coors stack from either side.
