It’s a super-short slate today and some seriously high-end options. Doesn’t mean I like them all though. Here’s a look…

Investing Heavily
Clayton Kershaw, LAD – The price is crazy high here, but with the Cubs fanning 22.1-percent of the time against southpaws this season, your chances of hitting double digit strikeouts seem pretty good. The only concern I have is that the Cubs own a .341 wOBA versus lefties and have a .184 ISO. Now obviously Kershaw is different from most lefties, but still. That’s an awful lot of money you could be spending elsewhere. And if you’re about to ask about Felix Hernandez, the Royals own a .322 wOBA against right-handers and strike out less than 16-percent of the time so I like him even less for the money.
Moderately Priced
Michael Pineda, NYY – Now you’re speaking my language here. OK, so the Phillies opened up a can of whoop-ass on Michael Wacha yesterday, but are we confident that they, as a team, have turned a corner and won’t hit like crap anymore? No, we are not. If they do, I’ll happily eat the big shit-sandwich I’m about to serve you here as we discuss the Phillies ‘ .274 wOBA versus right-handers, their 19.3-percent strikeout rate and their 44.1-percent ground ball rate. Pineda obviously has killer strikeout potential and should do some serious damage against the Phillies today.
Middle Class
Tommy Milone, MIN – If you’re really looking to save some dough on the pitching end, then take a look at Milone. He’s fanned 13 hitters over his last 14 innings and takes on a White Sox team that routinely gets peed on by southpaws. They own a nasty .240 wOBA and strike out 23.9-percent of the time. Milone certainly isn’t a world-beater by any means, but he’ll likely look like one when this game is finished.
Bargain Basement
Joe Blanton, KC – Two weeks in a row, I’m going back to this well, but it’s only because the match-up is a strong one. The Mariners are sitting on just a .289 wOBA against right-handed pitchers and they strike out 22.8-percent of the time. Granted, it’s Blanton here, but I am again confident that he can go long enough to earn the win and not give up more than two or three runs while doing so.
