Some days the schedule affords you a ridiculous number of quality options where you’ve got players with favorable match-ups at all sorts of different pricing tiers. You can splatter your cash lineups with multiple aces and you have more GPP options than you know what to do with. And then some days you’ve got a slate that looks like today’s. Bleh. Not that you don’t have options, but those options are both limited and, unfortunately, pricey. Ah well. What can you do? Better start sifting through the lineups for some cheap bats, I guess. In the meantime, here’s the data for the hurlers:

Felix Hernandez, SEA – Strangely beaten up by the Twins his last time out, King Felix gets the benefit of a rebound game against the Padres whose offensive numbers against right-handers rank at the very bottom of the league. We’re talking about a .272 wOBA and a 24.2-percent K-rate for a team that has now lost eight of their last nine games.
Max Scherzer, WAS – Just accept the fact that he’ll give up at least two home runs in this game but still strike out more than a batter per inning and you’re all set. That’s just the way it goes for Scherzer regardless of who the opponent is. The Phillies don’t really pose any sort of consistent threat and have a .268 wOBA with a 23.7-percent strikeout rate over the last seven days.
Jon Lester, CHC – The Dodgers’ numbers against southpaws this season just aren’t that strong as their .301 wOBA ranks just 21st in the majors and comes with a strikeout rate right around 20-percent. Working even more in Lester’s favor though is the fact that those numbers drop to .283 and 27-percent if you look at their totals over the last week.
Jacob deGrom, NYM – The Mets are looking to win this series and it will be up to deGrom to get the job done. Fortunately for him, the White Sox bats are unlikely to put up much of a fight. Their 65 wRC+ over the past week is awful and they’re posting a .268 wOBA with a 24.2-percent strikeout rate in that span. They’re also sitting on a below-average .135 ISO which means deGrom’s 0.56 HR/9 ain’t getting any higher.
Aaron Sanchez, TOR – Well, if I’m going to keep the streak alive, I better start this off with, “You know how much I hate to endorse a Jays pitcher throwing at home but…” It seems to be working after solid starts from Marco Estrada and J.A. Happ have helped me cash in some low-cost GPP tournaments. The Yankees bats are bound to wake up, but considering they’re mashing the ball in the dirt 46.2-percent of the time and Sanchez’ killer ground ball rates, it’s going to be awfully tough for them if Sanchez isn’t off his game and leaving pitches up in the zone. Even if he does lob in a mistake pitch or two, the Yankees are still posting just a league-worst .247 wOBA over the last seven days which means there’s no consistency with them whatsoever right now.
Jaime Garcia, STL – He’s going to be super-chalky given the lack of lower-priced options, but should deliver in style against the Brewers, a team he has a 2.03 ERA against with a 47:10 K:BB over 57.2 innings (eight starts). That includes a complete-game, one-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts against them earlier this season. He’s going to take full advantage of their 46-percent ground ball rate from the past week and should post another solid strikeout total as they’re fanning roughly 23-percent of the time against southpaws this season.
Jon Niese, PIT – Don’t look now, but Niese actually has four-straight quality starts with some tasty ground ball rates and only seven earned runs over his last 25.2 innings (2.45 ERA). The Marlins have hit lefties fairly well this season, but have been struggling lately, as evidenced by their .296 wOBA and 23rd-ranked 82 wRC+ over the past week
Albert Suarez, SF – Well of course you want to know who the Braves are facing. After all, you’ve made quite a bit of cash playing the opposing pitcher to them all season long, haven’t you? There’s little to no strikeout upside here, but he’s exhibited solid command throughout the minors, as well as during his short stint in the big leagues and should be a nice low-cost dart here for GPP tournaments.
