Not a bad day for the Pitching Coach yesterday, though MadBum screwed us all with that nightmarish performance against the Phillies. Is that going to happen again today? Hopefully not. We’ve got a lot of high-end pitching with strong match-ups, so just make sure you choose your starters wisely. Here’s a look at the data for Wednesday’s slate. With just three early games, I just lumped everyone together.

Max Scherzer, WAS – Not only are the Diamondbacks sitting just below league-average with their .310 wOBA against right-handed pitching this year, but they’re looking a little cold over the past week with a .281 wOBA and a 23-percent strikeout rate. Home runs still an issue for Scherzer, but the overall performance should still be plenty strong.

Johnny Cueto, SF – OK, so the Phillies crushed MadBum yesterday. But it’s a new day and, as we all know, the sun can shine on a dog’s ass at least once (yes, that’s twice in two days I’ve used that). The Phillies rank 28th in the league with a .295 wOBA against righties and have a 21.5-percent K-rate. I’m not buying the possibility that they can whup the Giants’ asses two days in a row like that.

Cole Hamels, TEX – A tricky match-up here as the Orioles can bust out the bats at any moment. But they have a .294 wOBA with a 25.8-percent strikeout rate over the last seven days and rank just 25th in the league with a .304 wOBA against southpaws this year.

Chris Sale, CHW – His last start against the Tigers looked strong while the start against them before that looked kind of mediocre. Detroit’s lineup is always tough, but some guys, you just have to believe that their overall talent, and Sale has a ton, can transcend the numbers. There’s risk here for the price, so maybe don’t invest too heavily, but he’s simply a name I cannot ignore.

Steven Matz, NYM – The Yankees have struggled against lefties all year long, ranking 27th with their .303 wOBA, so now with their bats so cold -- .267 wOBA with a 27.3-percent K-rate over the past week – I’m liking Matz’ chances here.

Jake Odorizzi, TB – The Royals are still sucking to the tune of a .268 wOBA and a paltry .117 ISO, so Odorizzi is getting a long look from me today in both cash games and GPP. He’s a little pricey and will have to get some run support, but if you’re playing multiple lineups, he’s definitely worth a look in my opinion.

Junior Guerra, MIL – Yes, just keep picking on the Padres. They couldn’t get past Davies last night and Guerra is actually a better pitcher. DO I really have to quote pathetic numbers for their offense or are we finally past that when they face a right-hander?

Michael Fulmer, DET – He’s going to have to out-duel Sale to get the win, but I’m digging this match-up for Fulmer. The White Sox have just a .303 wOBA against righties (26th in the league) and just a .283 wOBA over the past week.

Marco Estrada, TOR – The Astros are ice-friggin-cold right now and rank dead-last in the league with a .236 wOBA over the past week. They are also fanning at a 26.2-percent rate. I hate his price on Draft Kings but love it for FanDuel and Fantasy Aces.

Edinson Volquez, KC – This whole series has been low-scoring and should continue as such today with Volquez and Odorizzi on the hill. The Rays not only have a .290 wOBA over the past week but they’re doing it with a 29.4-percent strikeout rate. That’s just plain awful.

Michael Wacha, STL – The Reds are sitting just below the league-average with a .295 wOBA over the last seven days and their .304 wOBA against righties this year isn’t much better. Don’t expect big strikeout numbers, but he should be able to go five or six innings and nab the win.

Jeff Locke, PIT – I hate him. I really do. He sucks, but every so often he offers up a crazy good performance and you’re looking at him with that WTF-face. Well, considering the Braves, regardless of how well they’re hitting right now, still rank dead-last in the league with a .282 wOBA versus southpaws and have a sad .103 ISO against them, Locke is worth a look for a low-cost GPP dart.
