Hmmmmm. Let’s see….
Short slate? Check. Ugly pitching match-ups? Check. Yup. Must be a Monday! Looks like the week is going to start out slow for my DFS play and I warn you not to go too crazy on the games tonight. Even if you had a big weekend, there’s nothing wrong with pulling back on a day/night with only mediocre match-ups. We’ve got a few decent ones, but that really just means a lot of overlap, particularly in cash games. Keep in mind that we’ve got a bit of an early start thanks to a rain make-up game here so check that you’re playing the proper games. Here’s how things look to me, stats-wise, today…

Felix Hernandez, SEA – Well there’s no way I’m paying up for Max Scherzer in Colorado, so my next best option is easily King Felix in pitcher-friendly Angel Stadium. The Halos are struggling big time right now with their .229 wOBA over the past week and the fact that it comes with just a .297 slugging percentage and a 22.3-percent strikeout rate makes it even tastier.
Drew Smyly, TB – I’m a little leery of this match-up, but the Padres numbers against lefties have definitely dropped since the trade deadline. Who knew that trading Melvin Upton would hurt so bad? Matt Kemp, maybe, but Upton? Yeesh! In any event, with the numbers versus southpaws dropping I can focus more on the Padres’ .247 wOBA and ghastly 27.1-percent strikeout rate over the last seven days.
Robbie Ray, ARI – While I don’t normally like to recommend Ray, the Mets are looking awful right now. Not only do they own a 22nd-ranked .312 wOBA with a 22-percent K-rate against lefties, but they are also sitting on a woeful .234 wOBA over the past week which come with absolutely no power whatsoever, as evidenced by a .089 ISO over that span.
Bartolo Colon, NYM – While he’s had his moments of grotesqueness on the hill, Colon has actually looked really strong in three of his last four starts. Take away that one hiccup against the Rockies and the big man has allowed just three runs over his last 20.2 innings with a 13:2 K:BB. The D-Backs are below league-average with their .309 wOBA and 23.1-percent strikeout rate against righthanders this season and really aren’t looking much better over these last seven days (.315 wOBA with a 23.8-percent K-rate).
Daniel Norris, DET – Tough to trust a guy like Norris, but if we’re throwing some darts at some low-cost/high reward GPPs, then why the heck not? These Royals are still a disaster at the plate with their .296 wOBA and 22.8-percent strikeout rate over the past week. Norris won’t dazzle you with a complete game shutout, but he’ll give you enough of a return that if you choose the right bats, you can win some money.
Brandon Finnegan, CIN –With three-straight quality starts and only three runs allowed in his last 18 innings, Finnegan becomes a real nice GPP dart here in order to get some good Coors exposure. The Marlins are just a mess right now with a .289 wOBA, 21.2-percent strikeout rate and just a .111 ISO over the past week. Not to mention the fact that they’ve posted a 22.6-percent K-rate against southpaws all season and rank 21st in the league with just a .316 wOBA against them.
