It was a rough day for high-end pitching yesterday as Clayton Kershaw, Max Scherzer and Dallas Keuchel were all roughed up. Fortunately, David Price and Johnny Cueto came to my rescue as both posted some pretty sweet point totals from their games. The day was saved, at least on a few lineups. We’ve got another top-heavy slate today where it looks like paying up is what could be needed. Here’s a look:

Jake Arrieta, CHC – Well I’m not going to say he won’t no-hit the Brewers because he’s been pitching out of his mind for the last year or so and while I thought he’s regress a little this year, he’s done nothing of the sort. I won’t even quote recent batting numbers for the Brewers because it just doesn’t matter. They stink, they strike out a lot and Arrieta’s killing it. That’s expert analysis right there.

Sonny Gray, OAK – Tough to imagine the Tigers staying asleep for so long, but they’ve posted a .231 wOBA with a 26.4-percent strikeout rate over the last seven days. Gray has thrown four-straight quality starts, is averaging almost a strikeout per inning and has the opposition mashing the ball in the dirt more than 60-percent of the time.

Gio Gonzalez, WAS – Someone woke up the Phillies this week, but that was a lot of right-handed pitching they were seeing. Lefties are destroying them. The Phillies have a .242 wOBA versus southpaws and are fanning at a monstrous 33.8-percent.

Matt Harvey, NYM – In my opinion, he’s far too pricey for what he’s done, even if the Reds are a punching bag for right-handed pitching. He’s pitched six full innings just once which stinks for DFS, but there are still plenty of you who believe in him. I won’t use him, but for those who will, you can focus on the Reds’ .283 wOBA and 24.8-percent strikeout rate over the last week which is right in-line with his numbers versus righties this year.

Jeff Samardzija, SF – You can’t play him on Aces and he’s a little pricey on both FanDuel and Draft Kings, but the Padres offense has been shut down during this trip to AT&T Park. Their .258 wOBA and 58 wRC+ against righties ranks dead last in the league and they’re suffering from a 25.4-percent strikeout rate. Some fun daytime baseball here.

Justin Verlander, DET – The Tigers aren’t providing anyone with run support, but Verlander has looked solid in three of his four outings this season. He’ll have to out-duel, or at least keep pace with Sonny Gray to have value, but the A’s have just a .291 wOBA against right-handed pitching this season. His price seems fair on FanDuel and Aces, but he’s a little too costly for me on Draft Kings.

Steven Wright, BOS – I think we’re all, pretty much, at the point where we are willing to try out anyone who is facing the Braves. Wright should be a decent GPP play across the board.

Jose Berrios, MIN – Looks like Draft Kings is the only one making him available, so if you want to throw a dart at a well-hyped rookie, this would be the time to do it. First outings tend to mean five or six innings at the most, but if the Indians start hacking with their 23.5-percent strikeout rate, Berrios could be a nice dart here.
