What can you do? There are just some days where you have to pay up for the pitching. You look at the numbers, you look at the match-ups and all you keep doing is coming back to that top tier. It’s really the only safe place today and overall, it’s easier to find cheap bats that will produce than to rely on a cheap arm and hope. I’ll throw you some options, but if you’re not paying up for arms today, you’ve got an uphill climb.

Investing Heavily

Clayton Kershaw, LAD – Doesn’t matter that the Braves were on a role recently. They’re the worst offensive team against southpaws this season and Kershaw is the best southpaw in the game. ‘Nuff said.

Max Scherzer, WAS – Averaging a strikeout per inning, Scherzer should post some strong Ks against a Marlins club fanning 21.2-percent of the time. Add in a below league average .300 wOBA and a soft .115 ISO and you’ve got a great buy in Scherzer.

David Price, BOS – The Rays are seriously weak against left-handed pitching this year with a .245 wOBA and a 27th-ranked 63 wRC+. Add in Price’s 13.50 K/9 and the Rays’ 22.8-percent strikeout rate and you’ve got DFS deliciousness.

Moderately Priced

Gerrit Cole, PIT – The Padres have been showing some life lately, but these numbers just can’t be ignored, especially with a talent like Cole on the hill. San Diego’s .253 wOBA against righties ranks 29th in the league and they’re striking out 27.4-percent of the time. And really…a sub-.100 ISO? Come on.

Luis Severino, NYY – He’s got an electric ground ball rate and the A’s are mashing the ball in the dirt 46.2-percent of the time against righties. The .127 ISO with just a 7.8-percent HR/FB is downright awful, even if they are playing in hitter-friendly Yankee Stadium. You won’t see big strikeout numbers, but Severino should keep Oakland off the board.

Middle Class

Jered Weaver, LAA – You know you’re moving into shady territory when we’re sitting here and giving consideration to Weaver. It’s the White Sox though and their offense has been awful this season. They may not be striking out a ton, but they’re not hitting for any kind of legit power (.113 ISO) and their .269 wOBA against righties ranks them 28th in the league.

Bargain Basement

Cody Anderson, CLE – It’s your GPP dart for the day here as the Mariners.290 wOBA against righties gives hope that Anderson can come away with a productive day on the hill. His 5.91 K/9 is on the weak side, but with the Mariners fanning 23.6-percent of the time against right-handed pitching, it should climb a little. You’ll definitely be able to grab some big bats with him, but keeping pace with those who pay up for pitching today could be a little rough.
