Chalkboard Fantasy MLB Picks Today: Saturday, 5/23

Corbin Carroll MLB Chalkboard Fantasy Pick: Over 1.5 Hits+Runs+RBI

It’s been a rough season for Colorado Rockies starter Michael Lorenzen. He has an ugly 7.03 ERA and 1.91 WHIP over 11 outings so far. In turn, he’s worth fading any time he’s on the mound at this point. Let’s do it today and back Corbin Carroll to have a good game.

The Arizona Diamondbacks’ outfielder is swinging a hot bat right now. Carroll is hitting .348 with a 1.191 OPS over his past 13 games. He’s also gone over 1.5 combined hits, runs, and RBI in nine of his last 10 games coming into tonight.

As for Lorenzen, he’s allowing a .408 batting average and 1.208 OPS to left-handed hitters this year. He also just faced Arizona in his latest start and gave up seven runs on nine hits. In that game, Carroll smacked two home runs. He could easily go deep again today, especially with how well he’s been hitting. At the very least, though, let’s bank on Carroll going over 1.5 hits+runs+RBI.

Freddy Peralta MLB Chalkboard Fantasy Pick: Under 5.5 Strikeouts

Freddy Peralta has been mostly productive in his first season with the New York Mets. The veteran right-hander owns a solid 3.31 ERA, and he’s allowed two or fewer earned runs in four of his last five starts. However, we’re fading his strikeout total in today’s matchup.

The Miami Marlins only have an 18.5% strikeout rate against right-handed pitching over the past two weeks. That’s the second-lowest mark in the league during this stretch. They also have just an 18.8% K rate vs. righties over the last week (eighth-lowest in MLB).

Strikeouts should be tough to come by for Peralta here. The Mets’ starter currently has a career-low 23.2% strikeout rate this season. Plus, his 10.7% walk rate is his highest since his rookie campaign in 2018. He’s gone under 5.5 strikeouts in four of his last eight starts. Today’s road matchup says he’ll likely do it again.
