Dodgers vs. Diamondbacks Predictions: Wednesday, September 24th

The Arizona Diamondbacks have been surging over the past two weeks and are still very much alive for the third NL Wild Card spot. The D-backs are 8-3 over their last 11 games and now 16-8 over the past month or so. Let’s back them to stay hot in Wednesday’s matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Diamondbacks starter Ryne Nelson is pitching very well lately. He has a 2.17 ERA over his past 5 starts and an impressive 2.97 ERA since the All-Star break (12 starts). Nelson also boasts a 2.58 ERA and 0.96 WHIP at home this season.

Nelson will have to deal with a tough Dodgers lineup tonight. Even so, the right-hander owns a 1.55 ERA in 6 career outings (3 starts) against the divisional rivals. Plus, we can’t ignore his current form. Nelson has now allowed 2 or fewer earned runs in 13 of his last 18 starts with a 2.80 ERA in this stretch.

On the other side, Blake Snell starts for Los Angeles. Betting against the southpaw is always risky, but the Diamondbacks are crushing the split lately. In fact, their .861 OPS, .367 wOBA, and 136 wRC+ vs. lefties in September all lead the majors.

Admittedly, Snell has looked dominant in his past 2 starts. However, his road struggles may bleed through today. The Dodgers’ lefty has a 5.29 ERA on the road this season compared to a 1.17 ERA at home. That includes 5 runs allowed to Pittsburgh in his last road outing.

There’s value in the Diamondbacks to get the win at home. They’re 13-5 in their last 18 home games, while the Dodgers are 6-14 in their last 20 road contests. Arizona just pulled off a comeback win over LA last night as well.

Astros vs. Athletics Predictions: Wednesday, September 24th

After getting swept by the Seattle Mariners this past weekend and losing last night, the Houston Astros now find themselves in a tough position. They sit 4 games back in the AL West and 1 game back for the third AL Wild Card spot heading into Wednesday. However, the arrow might still be pointing up.

The Astros end the regular season with matchups against the Athletics and Angels in their final two series. The path is there for Houston to end the year strong and clinch a postseason berth. Let’s back the ‘Stros tonight with their ace on the mound.

Hunter Brown has a 2.30 ERA amid a Cy Young-caliber season. The right-hander is dealing lately, with a 1.76 ERA over his past 9 starts. He’s also allowed 2 or fewer earned runs in 10 straight starts now.

Brown should keep it going in a favorable matchup. The Athletics have the league’s worst offense against right-handed pitching over the past week, with a .228 wOBA and 41 wRC+ in the split. Brown has faced the A’s twice this season and allowed 2 runs over 11 combined innings. Plus, he boasts a 2.29 ERA and 2.95 FIP on the road this year.

On the other side, Athletics starter Luis Severino brings in a 4.72 ERA on the season. He has just a 4.05 ERA over 4 starts since returning from injury this month. Severino has been very up and down all year, and those down starts usually come at home. The veteran owns an ugly 6.51 ERA at home, compared to a 3.02 ERA on the road. Houston should get to him enough to provide run support for Brown.
