Week 2 did not go as planned from a fantasy perspective. The Giants and Saints didn’t come close to the expected total and the Jaguars were on the opposite end of the expected blowout. In fact, just one player received 4 targets in the red zone this week and it was the Bengals’ Brandon LaFell. Coincidently, he caught none of them so he can safely remain on your waiver wire.

TARGET MONSTERS:

All eyes were on the Chargers receiving corps in Week 2 to see if they could step up their game in the absence of Keenan Allen. Well, Travis Benjamin didn’t disappoint scoring two TD’s in his 2 red zone looks. However, Tyrell Williams received 3 red zone targets and hauled in two passes of his own. Williams is a big bodied receiver who has surprising speed. Expect him to be a matchup nightmare for the Colts this Sunday in the red zone yet again making him a sneaky GPP DFS play. The Eagles Nelson Agholor caught two of his three red zone targets showing that rookie QB Carson Wentz is very comfortable spreading the ball around.

On the year, Jordy Nelson and Larry Fitzgerald lead the NFL in red zone targets. Both are 4 for 6 with 2 TD’s for Nelson and 3 for Fitzgerald. The Cardinals have a cookie matchup against a bruised and battered Bills defense. Expect Fitzgerald to have plenty of opportunities in improve those numbers. Jordy Nelson will play in his first home game of the year and my suspicion after a few weeks of treading water is that Nelson finally breaks out in this contest against Detroit.

MOST EFFICIENCT:

Mohamed Sanu is a perfect 4 for 4 with one TD in the red zone this season. With the Falcons destined for a shootout in New Orleans Monday night, it would be wise to start him this week in all formats. Kelvin Benjamin is also a perfect 3 for 3 so far on this young season with 3 TD’s himself. He’s working his way toward first round status in 2017 at this pace. Week 3 against the Vikings will be a tough assignment, but Benjamin has proven to be a problem for defensive backs no matter how talented.

Jason Witten continues to lead all tight ends with 5 red zone targets and three catches. He’s yet to find the end zone inside the 20 however, so he lacks upside especially in standard leagues. Shane Vereen was the only RB to have more than one red zone target in Week 2 and although he did haul in two receptions, he failed to score. Don’t expect that volume trend to continue. Vereen isn’t a fantasy entity.

ONES TO WATCH:

Besides Sanu, Michael Floyd has a real opportunity in Week 3 versus Buffalo to shake off a slow start. Floyd has received 5 red zone targets over the first two weeks, so Carson Palmer hasn’t lost faith in Floyd. Even more frustrating than Floyd has been the duo of Allen Hurns and Allen Robinson in Jacksonville. Hurns has caught 2 of his 4 red zone looks and Robinson has just 1 in two games. Neither has scored a TD. The Ravens defense isn’t a cake walk, but Blake Bortles is historically a much better QB at home. This trend will reverse itself very soon. Consider this your last chance to buy low on either of them right now!
