Last Season’s Fantasy Highlights

Victor Martinez’s career year was the highlight of highlights. VMart hit 32 homers, knocked in 103, posted a batting average of .335 and an OBP of .409. Many fantasy teams that shopped at the VMART in the spring took Yoo-Hoo showers in the fall (including the Fantasy Alarm Colton and the Wolfman team that won both the FSTA and Tout Wars AL expert titles with VMart leading the way).

What Has Changed?

Yoenis Cespedes will play left field after arriving from Boston, Anthony Gose will try and hold down cetner after arriving from Toronto. Miguel Cabrera may not be ready to start the season as the anchor of what has been a fearsome Detroit offense. Rick Porcello and Drew Smyly now toe the rubber for other squads while Alfredo Simon and Shane Greene attempt to take their places.

What to Expect:

Expect Miggy to hit once he returns, VMart to hit but not at the crazy level of last year and J.D. Martinez to regress to a useful but not All-Star level. On the pitching side, expect David Price to continue to seek a Kershaw-like payday and Justin Verlander to continue to be exhibit A for those making the case against long term contracts for pitchers in their 30s.

This Year’s Surprise:

Joakim Soria beats out Joe Nathan for the closer job and does a terrific job for most of the year. Nathan showed all kinds of signs that he is no longer closer-worthy last year (4.81 ERA and 1.53 WHIP). Soria on the other hand, despite his weak showing after being traded to Detroit late in the season, struck out more than a batter an inning and allowed less than a baserunner an inning. In addition, Soria saved 18 of 20 in 2014 while Nathan blew seven saves and lost an additional four games. You heard it here.
