2016 RECAP

Record: 89 - 73

Last Season’s Fantasy Highlights

Production from so many unlikely sources highlighted the Orioles improbable run to the AL East title and propelled many who invested in Orioles to fantasy league titles. Having to pick one highlight, Zach Britton would be the choice. He seized the closer role, ratcheted up the fastball to an average velocity of over 95 MPH and notched 37 saves with a 1.65 ERA and 0.90 WHIP.

What Has Changed?

Nick Markakis is gone, likely to be replaced in RF by Steven Pearce. Alejandro De Aza will be around all year and man LF and Matt Wieters should return from Tommy John surgery though his effectiveness and ability to catch every day will be a huge question throughout 2015.

What to Expect:

Expect Orioles not named Adam Jones or Chris Davis to struggle at the plate. Davis will be undervalued as people look at his drop from 53 homers to 26 and his paltry .196 batting average. Smart owners however will see a guy who is a veritable sure thing to hit 30+ HR, will recognize that his PED suspension for Adderall had nothing to do with his huge 2013 and his .247 BABIP will likely return to a number close to his career average of .324 and take his batting average with it. Will he hit .300 no? Will he hit for a good enough average for someone with that power? Yup.

This Year’s Surprise:

This is the year Kevin Gausman lives up to the hype. Like Garrett Richards before his 2014 breakout, Gausman was hurt by being shuttled between the rotation and the pen. Also like Richards, Gausman throws gas, averaging close to 95 MPH on his heater. This is exactly the type of pitcher who will be on many fantasy baseball title winners this year. Invest.
