Two new champions will be crowned on Thursday. Ben Shelton meets Karen Khachanov in Toronto, while Naomi Osaka faces Canadian wildcard Victoria Mboko in Montreal.

National Bank Open Finals Prediction For Thursday, 8/7

Shelton has managed tight moments well, especially in his last two matches. He beat Taylor Fritz 6-3, 7-6(4) in the semifinals and has looked sharper since the round of 16. His serve has set the tone, and his forehand has opened up points early. The young American also holds a 1-0 head-to-head edge over Khachanov, having won 6-3, 7-5 earlier this year in Indian Wells (a match that totaled just 21 games).

Khachanov reached the final with a three-set win over Alexander Zverev, saving a match point and rallying from 1-3 down in the final-set tiebreak. That capped a strong run through Nava, Ruud, and rising American Alex Michelson. His path has tested his stamina and shot tolerance in different ways. He’s served well under pressure and tightened up his unforced errors late in sets, but hasn’t created as many return chances or held ground as effectively in rallies as Shelton. If Shelton maintains his current rhythm, it will take another physical three-set effort from Khachanov to stay in it.

The women’s final brings a stronger edge. Naomi Osaka has dropped just one set all tournament and has handled key service moments with composure. Her serve continues to hold up under pressure, and she’s winning baseline exchanges early in rallies because of her forehand and return position. She enters as a moderate favorite over Canadian wildcard Victoria Mboko, who has pulled off three top-tier wins this week, defeating Sofia Kenin, Coco Gauff, and Elena Rybakina, all without showing any major signs of letdown.

Mboko’s backhand return has been one of the sharpest shots in the draw. She’s pressured second serves, broken opponents at least four times in every match since the R128, and shown strong rally tolerance. But she’s also hit 10 or more double faults in four of her six matches, making serve reliability a swing factor. In the semifinal, she saved a match point, broke Rybakina twice late in the third, and won five of the last six points in the tiebreak. She’s kept every match close, including straight-set wins over Gauff and Bouzas Maneiro and that deciding-set escape over Rybakina.

The spread gives very slight room for Mboko to lose and still cover. She’s consistently stayed close even when trailing. Osaka’s last two opponents haven’t brought the same level of counterpunching or depth that Mboko is likely to offer.
