***Updated post-qualifying lineups are posted below with analysis*** Denny Hamlin, Ryan Newman, Clint Bowyer, and Matt DiBenedetto will all move to the back of the field.

I Love NY 355

Watkins Glen International

Last Sunday was the second race of the season at The Tricky Triangle and it saw Kyle Busch drive away with his first victory of 2017, thereby locking himself into the Chase, though he was likely there even without the win. Compared to the week before at Indy, last week’s race was relatively smooth with only a few non-stage cautions. The win by Kyle now leaves just three spots open in the 16-driver first round of the Chase with five races left before the start of the playoffs.

From a pond to a lake is the move from Long Pond, PA (Pocono) to Seneca Lake and Watkins Glen International in New York state. “The Glen” as it’s known, is of similar track length to that of Indy and Pocono (both 2.5-mile tracks), coming in at 2.454 miles per circuit. That distance is for the short course layout that NASCAR uses as opposed to the full course at 3.40 miles that includes “the boot” as well. Seven turns in total make up a full lap not including the bus stop, or inner loop, on the back straight.

While this is another road course, the second raced on in the schedule, it is a far different race than Sonoma. Watkins Glen is a much faster track than Sonoma and to a degree a less technical one. Without as many turns or hairpins or a chicane it means cars carry much more speed over the course. There are elevation changes at this road course as well, though not to the degree that Sonoma contains. It’s important to note that the “355” in the race name refers to kilometers run and not laps or miles. The race itself is 90 laps in length, making it the shortest by laps of the season.

Dating back to 2005, there are only two instances of a driver leading more than 51 laps in a race, and in most years there are two drivers very close to each other in the category. The last three years have seen no drivers lead more than 30 laps in the 90-lap race. Overall, 94% of winners have come from the top-five starting spots however the last three races have seen winners come from outside the top-five spots.

DFS Playbook

DriverDraft KingsNASCAR LiveDescription
Martin Truex Jr.$10,500$28.00Truex has run second and third at practice this week and has a top-10 in the last two races. Six top-10s in 11 career races and the third best average finish over that span mean a play in both
Kyle Busch$10,300$28.00Busch got the first win of the season last week and has another fast car this week. He has led the most laps in his career in the field and has 10 top-10s in 12 races along with two wins here
Kevin Harvick$10,000$27.75Harvick got his win this season at the other road course and has looked solid this week. He has a win here and a third place finish in the last two races. Harvick is more of a GPP play Sunday
Brad Keselowski$9,800$26.50Keselowski hasn't won here but has finished 3rd and 7th in the last two races. He has also led 55 laps (good for most in the last two) and 94 in his career for second best. Either works for him
Kurt Busch$9,600$19.25Kurt has a 5th and 11th place finish in the last two races along with three top-fives and seven top-10s in 16 career races here and the fourth most laps led at 65 in his time at Watkins Glen
Clint Bowyer$9,500$24.25Bowyer has a sparkling +11 positional differential here in the last two years including a top-six finish. He hasn't been quite so solid over his 11 races here but is still a good GPP option Sunday
Denny Hamlin$9,200$27.25Hamlin won here last year on a great last lap pass over Truex and Keselowski. He did run P5 in final practice on Saturday as well. Hamlin may not drive Sunday if his girlfriend goes into labor
A.J. Allmendinger$8,800$13.00Allmendinger is a former winner here, in 2014, and still needs a win to clinch a spot in the Chase. He has a top-five in the last two races and five top-10s in eight career races. GPP is better
Joey Logano$8,600$24.25Logano won back in 2015 and finished second last year behind Hamlin. He also has a great +10 PD in that span along with five top-10s in eight races at The Glen. Cash or GPP makes sense
Matt Kenseth$7,900$26.25Kenseth has two top-10s and a top-five in the last two races here with a +8 positional mark. Overall he has seven top-10s in 17 career races at WGI. He ran P13 and P20 in practice. GPP play
Michael McDowell$7,100$10.00McDowell is in a different price range this week at $7,100. He ran P9 and P10 in practice Saturday but has only finished P17 and P20 the last two years. He is only a GPP play this week
Ty Dillon$6,300$16.50Dillon is a rookie this season and hasn’t run at Watkins Glen in MENCS. However he has finished P5 and P11 in 2015 and 2016 while P7 on Saturday. He is a cheap GPP option this week
Trevor Bayne$6,100$19.00Bayne has the best PD In the field over the last two years at +17.5 along with a top-10 finish. Bayne has been very hit and miss this year with just two-10s total in 21 races. Another GPP play
Danica Patrick$5,900$10.50Patrick is used to this track from open-wheeled racing series and has a +7.5 positional differential at WGI in the past two races. She has two top-20s in four races here and 11 laps led.
Landon Cassill$5,200$5.50Cassill is the budget-friendly play this week with his +9 positional differential the last two years and a near top-20 finish in that span. Not much more should be expected at this price level

Optimal Lineups

Draft Kings Cash
Martin Truex Jr.$10,500
Kyle Busch$10,300
Brad Keselowski$9,800
Joey Logano$8,600
Danica Patrick$5,900
David Ragan$4,900

Total$50,000

The cash lineup is made up of the most solid drivers in the field here over the last two races, and their careers. Martin Truex Jr. has six top-10s in 11 career races here and has been talked about as one of the two fastest cars this week. Kyle Busch has led the most laps here in the field at 195 and has by far the fastest car on the track this week. Brad Keselowski has the most laps led in the last two years with 55 along with a P3 and P7 and four top-fives in seven races at WGI. Joey Logano won here in 2015 and finished runner-up last year and still needs a win. He starts P13 but has the ability to move through the field well. Danica Patrick and David Ragan are the two budget-friendly plays this week with good histories here especially from Danica with a +6.5 PD in the last two years.

Draft Kings GPP
Kevin Harvick$10,000
Brad Keselowski$9,800
Kurt Busch$9,600
A.J. Allmendinger$8,800
Trevor Bayne$6,100
Landon Cassill$5,400

Total$49,700

Pivot: Kyle Busch for Kevin Harvick

The first GPP lineup starts with Kevin Harvick who has a win here previously and eight top-10s in 16 tries but will start P20 Sunday after running P11 in both practices. Brad Keselowski is next up for the same reason that make him playable in the cash games. Kurt Busch has a +7.5 positional differential in the last two years and nearly two top-10s. A.J. Allmendinger comes from open-wheeled racing and won here in 2014, and is still needing a win to clinch a playoff spot. He also has five top-10s in eight races here. Trevor Bayne will start P30 on Sunday but has moved up from that starting spot in the last two years to possess a +17.5 PD. Landon Cassill is the budget-friendly play as a guy who has a top-20 finish and a solid PD in the last two years.

Draft Kings GPP #2
Martin Truex Jr.$10,500
Kyle Busch$10,300
A.J. Allmendinger$8,800
Joey Logano$8,600
Ty Dillon$6,300
Landon Cassill$5,400

Total$49,900

The second GPP is a morphing of the cash and first GPP lineup to produce a very solid group of six drivers. The new driver added to the six-driver roster is Ty Dillon. Dillon maybe a rookie in MENCS but he has run at Watkins Glen three times in Xfinity and finished in the top-10 each time. We aren't looking for that out of him but a Top-15 isn't out of the questoin.
