Philadelphia Phillies at Los Angeles Dodgers -170  T: 7.5

The Dodgers took Game 1 of this series 5-4 on Monday scoring two in the sixth and three in the eighth to eventually win the game. The visiting Phillies will send Jake Arrieta to the mound for Game 2. Arrieta is coming off one of his best outings of the year throwing seven scoreless innings while striking out seven and walking just one. Arrieta has allowed two earned runs or less in eight of his nine starts this year and has really been exactly what the Phillies paid for. The one thing about Arrieta this year is he’s not really striking anyone out. He has a 6.14 K/9 which would be the second lowest mark of his career behind his rookie campaign.

If you look up and down the Phillies lineup, they really aren’t hitting at all. Other than Carlos Santana who’s hitting .303 over his last 10 games, most of their team is near the Mendoza Line over their last 10 games. Here’s some Phillies’ averages over the last 10:

Odubel Herrera: .216

Rhys Hoskins: .105

Cesar Hernandez: .225

Aaron Altherr: .190

Lefties have been Kenta Maeda’s one weakness, as Maeda starts for the Dodgers tonight. So although they’re struggling, Hernandez is 3-for-8 with a homer off of him, Nick Williams has a homer off of him in two at-bats, and Pedro Florimon is hitting from the left side and batting second.

Speaking of Maeda, although he’s struggled against lefties, he’s been very good on the grand scheme of things. Maybe what’s been most impressive by Maeda is the amount of strikeouts he’s amassing. He’s averaging 11.72 K/9 which is over two more strikeouts per nine than he’s had in his previous two seasons. He’s also upped his SwStr rate to 14.4-percent from 12.5 last season.

Over the last two weeks, the Dodgers offense ranks 12th in OPS and 15th in wOBA against right-handed pitching. Left-handed hitters have given Arrieta more trouble than righties this season. That said, the Dodgers are only sending two lefties out in their lineup in Max Muncy and Cody Bellinger. Muncy has shown a ton of pop lately posting an OPS of 1.038 over his last 10 games. Over that span he’s hit three bombs and a double. Bellinger on the other hand has been absolutely horrible lately. He has a .086 AVG over his last 10 games but has hit two homers. He’s three for his last 35 at the dish.

Two of the hottest hitters on the Dodgers are Matt Kemp and Yasiel Puig. Kemp is slashing .419/.424/.645 over his last 10 while Puig has tried keeping up with him with a .346/.433/.731 slash in his own right. Puig actually has a little success against Jake Arrieta going 3-for-8 against him. Chris Taylor is one more guy I’m keeping an eye on as he’s had five extra-base hits over his previous eight games.
