Underdog Fantasy MLB Picks: Friday, 5/1

Jacob Misiorowski MLB Underdog Fantasy Pick: Higher Than 6.5 Strikeouts

Jacob Misiorowski has quickly turned into one of the top strikeout artists in the majors. The Milwaukee Brewers’ right-hander owns an elite 37.2% strikeout rate this year, ranking in the 97th MLB percentile. He also boasts a 39.5% whiff rate (98th percentile).

This continues a trend from last season, when Misiorowski posted a 32.0% strikeout rate, which was in the top 7% of MLB pitchers. He also had an 11.8 K/9 rate across his 15 MLB outings a year ago after being called up. So far this season, he’s struck out at least 9 batters in 4 of 6 starts while averaging 8.5 Ks per outing.

Count on the Miz to rack up punchouts in a favorable spot tonight. The Washington Nationals have a 25.3% strikeout rate vs. right-handed pitching over the past week, the third-highest mark in the majors during this stretch. Plus, over the past two weeks against righties, the Nats have just a .210 batting average (29th in MLB) and .293 wOBA (28th) in the split.

Vladimir Guerrero MLB Underdog Fantasy Pick: Higher Than 1.5 Hits+Runs+RBI

Vladimir Guerrero has been among the most productive hitters in baseball this season. The Toronto Blue Jays' first baseman owns a .907 OPS and a .354 batting average, the latter ranking third among all qualified MLB hitters. Today, we get a chance to back him again in a favorable matchup.

Simeon Woods Richardson has had a rough start to the year for the Minnesota Twins, posting a 6.30 ERA and 1.70 WHIP across 6 outings. His underlying numbers don’t offer much encouragement either, with a 6.02 FIP and an 11.0% strikeout rate – the lowest among MLB starters with at least 30 innings pitched. Opponents are also hitting .309 against him thus far.

All signs point to another strong showing from Guerrero. He’s hitting ..425 BA and 1.052 OPS over the past 11 games and has surpassed 1.5 combined hits, runs, and RBIs in 7 of those 11 contests. Woods Richardson has also struggled against right-handed hitters, allowing a .306 average and an .884 OPS. Guerrero, meanwhile, is batting .352 with an .833 OPS against righties. Plus, he’s gone 4-for-6 in his career against Woods Richardson, which definitely helps.
