Week 1 of the fantasy baseball season comes to a close today but not before we take a look at some of the outstanding performances from players that were high up on many fantasy baseball player rankings and rookie rankings coming into your fantasy baseball drafts this season. We also saw one of the league's top closers hit the MLB injury list and some names that might still be on your fantasy baseball waiver wire making a strong case to be added heading into Week 2 of the fantasy baseball season!

Fantasy Baseball Top Plays

Justin Verlander Still Has It

Coming into this season Verlander had started just one game since 2020 so there were certainly some question marks as the now 39-year-old entered the 2022 season. Those questions were answered pretty emphatically on Saturday as Verlander needed just 87 pitches to throw eight shutout innings against the Mariners while striking out eight and walking none. This followed up his season debut performance where he allowed just one run over five innings while striking out seven. The 2019 Cy Young Award winner is looking everything like the man that won that award three seasons ago and if you were willing to take the chance on Verlander in your fantasy baseball drafts this season you have to be ecstatic.

Hunter Greene Hype Continues Despite Loss to Dodgers

One of the top prospects in baseball coming into the 2022 season, Greene has done nothing but impress over his first two starts as his 101 MPH fastball is making headlines across the league. On Saturday he navigated a tough Dodgers lineup, throwing 5.1 innings while allowing just two runs on five hits while striking out six and more importantly he walked none. Greene is now 1-1 on the season with 13 strikeouts over 10.1 innings. If by chance Greene is still on your fantasy baseball waiver wire I would suggest picking him up as this kid is clearly something special.

Coors Field No Match For C.J. Cron

Rockies first basemen C.J. Cron launched home runs four and five on Saturday and has now homered three times over the last two games. We know Coors Field provides a power bump to guys like Cron who hit 19 of his 28 home runs at home last season. We generally look to use Cron against left-handed pitching but both home runs came against right-handers last night.

Ryan Pressly Lands on the Injured List

Astros placed closer Ryan Pressly on the injured list Friday with right knee inflammation. Pressly had three saves already this season and was one of the top closers off the board in fantasy baseball drafts this season. Héctor Neris pitched the ninth inning Saturday in what was a non-save situation but he is one of a few options with closing experience that the Astros could look to when it comes to closing out games while Pressly is out of action. Make sure you check out the fantasy baseball closer grid from Joe Gallina as it gets updated throughout the season.
