MLB Fantasy Baseball Headlines

Orioles Win Little League Classic

The Baltimore Orioles beat the Boston Red Sox 5-3 in the 2022 Little League Classic in Williamsport, PA on Sunday night. Dean Kremer threw 5.1 strong innings for the Orioles, allowing one run on five hits while striking out four. Meanwhile, Red Sox starter Nick Pivetta was also impressive as he gave up one run on six hits and struck out nine batters over 5.2 innings. MLB announced during the game that the Washington Nationals and Philadelphia Phillies will face off in next year’s Little Classic. Let's hope the 2023 version is just as dramatic and exciting as yesterday, when Jorge Mateo knocked a three-run double in the eighth to give the O's the lead.

Mark Canha’s Two Home Runs & Epic Bat Flip Lift Mets

The New York Mets entered yesterday's rain delay in the bottom of the sixth inning in a three-run hole to the Philadelphia Phillies. Once the sky cleared, though, Mark Canha put the team on his back to take a 10-9 victory over the division-rival Phillies. Canha homered twice, once in the seventh and again in the ninth, to lift the Mets to the win. They had to come back from 4-0, 7-4, and 8-7 deficits – but it was all worth it as the Mets moved four games up on the Braves for the NL East lead. If you roster Canha in fantasy baseball, then you were probably bat flipping right along with him after the second home run.

Sick Shohei Ohtani Falters in Detroit

Shohei Ohtani struggled right away in his matchup yesterday against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park. His velocity was down and Riley Greene took advantage, hitting the longest home run that Ohtani has surrendered in his career. It was later revealed that the Los Angeles Angels' two-way star was battling a stomach bug as he allowed three runs on five hits over four innings in the 4-0 loss. Ohtani set a season-high with four walks and tied a season-low with only two strikeouts. It was the third-shortest outing of the season for Ohtani, who had worked at least 5.2 innings in each of his previous 11 starts. The Angels' ace fell to 10-8 with a 2.83 ERA.

Andrew Benintendi Finally Fitting In With Yankees

Benintendi’s first homer as a Yankee was timely on Paul O’Neill Day in the Bronx. It seems like forever since the New York Yankees received strong starting pitching, great defense, solid bullpen work, and clutch hitting all in the same game – but they did yesterday. It enabled them to avoid a four-game sweep by the Toronto Blue Jays. This was Benintendi’s first jack since coming over in a July 27 trade from the Kansas City Royals, and it's just his fourth home run of the season.

Justin Steele Continues Hot Streak

Chicago Cubs starter Justin Steele came through once again as the homegrown starting pitcher seems to be sticking in the rotation. Plus, he’s getting better as he continues to pile up new personal-highs in workload numbers this year. Steele has posted a 1.47 ERA in his last nine starts and he has an 0.86 ERA over his last six starts – the lowest in the major leagues during that stretch. He also has had three starts of at least nine strikeouts during that span.

Cardinals Win 7th Straight

The St. Louis Cardinals stretched their winning streak to seven games with a 6-4 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks yesterday. Lars Nootbaar hit his first career leadoff home run while Nolan Arenado hit a go-ahead two-run single in the seventh inning and finished with three RBI. The Cardinals remain a comfortable five games up on the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central race.

Rays Getting Hot in Mid-August

This is so typical of the Tampa Bay Rays in August. They have won seven of their past nine games and just took their third consecutive series win. After coming out of the gates 3-8 following the All-Star Break, the Rays have now won 11 of their past 17 games and are back to 10 games over .500. Plus, they are now tied with the Blue Jays for an AL Wild Card spot – sound familiar?
