I usually avoid Coors Field stacks, and I have a couple of pretty good reasons for doing so. First of all, there are no circumstances that do not involve time travel under which I will feel comfortable paying $5,000 on DraftKings for Mark Reynolds. Equally important for our purposes, Coors stacks tend to be popular, and I can be a bit of a contrarian. That being said, there are times that can call for a Coors stack, and I believe Monday’s night slate is one of them.
I would favor a stack against Jarred Cosart under any circumstances, and if anything, it is a bit unfortunate for our purposes that this game is in Colorado and not San Diego. We could play the same stack for less and we would still be confident the Rockies would score a bunch of runs against Cosart and the San Diego bullpen.
That being said, I believe a Rockies stack makes sense because there really aren’t any other bad pitchers on Monday’s night slate (or Monday’s day slate, for that matter). Obviously, you can stack righties against Matt Moore, Brandon Finnegan or Alex Wood, and I wouldn’t argue if you wanted to stack Padres as opposed to Rockies, but none of those are slam dunks. That being said, the easiest thing to do is say “Hey, the Rockies are a good stack at home, and here are five guys in particular I like.” That doesn’t help anybody. I believe it will be far more helpful to look at potential Rockies stacks for Monday, with a particular focus on the places we can save money to be able to afford a Rockies stack.
FanDuel 1
P- Tyler Glasnow, PIT
C- Willson Contreras, CHC
1B- Wil Myers, SD
2B- Javier Baez, CHC
3B- Nolan Arenado, COL
SS- Trevor Story, COL
OF- Gerardo Parra, COL
OF- Bryce Harper, WAS
OF- Starling Marte, PIT
The easiest way to afford a Rockies stack on FanDuel is to play Tyler Glasnow. Even if you think Glasnow will repeat his 12.4% walk rate from, he probably should cost more than $4,400 considering his strikeout and win potential. The problem with this strategy is Glasnow will likely be just as popular as our Rockies stack. There is a chance that even if Glasnow and our stack are good, we won’t gain much of an advantage over the field. That being said, if Glasnow picks ups the win and adds in some strikeouts, we will be off to the races with a lineup stacked with good hitters.
FanDuel 2
P- Adam Wainwright, STL
C- Francisco Cervelli, CIN
1B- Joey Votto, CIN
2B- DJ LeMahieu, COL
3B- Nolan Arenado, COL
SS- Addison Russell, CHC
OF- Gerardo Parra, COL
OF- Carlos Gonzalez. COL
OF- Hunter Renfroe, SDP
I’m not convinced Tanner Roark is better than Adam Wainwright, and I’m not convinced the Nationals are better than the Cardinals, and going with someone like Jacob deGrom would mean not even being able to afford Votto and Renfroe.
DraftKings 1
P- Jon Lester, CHC
P- Tyler Chatwood, COL
C- Tony Wolters, COL
1B- Joey Votto, CIN
2B- Addison Russell, CHC
3B- Javier Baez, CHC
SS- Trevor Story, COL
OF- Charlie Blackmon, COL
OF- Gerardo Parra, COL
OF- Billy Hamilton, CIN
As with our first FanDuel lineup, this DraftKings lineup features a cheap, risky pitcher. The Rockies are the biggest favorites of the night, so I’m hoping even if Chatwood isn’t significantly better than he was at home last season, he can at least get through five innings with the lead. Also, San Diego’s lineup isn’t exactly Murderer’s Row, even in Coors. It is important to note you can substitute Wainwright and deGrom for Lester and Chatwood and save $200. You can still use the hitters even if you are less bullish on Chatwood than I am.
DraftKings 2
P- Jon Lester, CHC
P- Adam Wainwright, STL
C- Tony Wolters, COL
1B- Matt Carpenter, STL
2B- Kike Hernandez, LAD
3B- Nolan Arenado, COL
SS- Addison Russell, CHC
OF- Charlie Blackmon, COL
OF- Gerardo Parra, COL
OF- Albert Almora Jr., CHC
Tony Wolters, Gerardo Parra and Charlie Blackmon are reasonably priced on DraftKings, and which is one of the reasons I can play a Colorado stack and still spend $18,500 on my pitchers.
