Daily Fantasy Sports is sweeping the country as long time fantasy players are ditching the long drawn out seasonal leagues for the instant satisfaction of daily contests and roster making.  The industry has really grown rapidly over the past few years with major sporting leagues such as the NFL becoming direct sponsors with Daily Fantasy sites.  For some Daily Fantasy can certainly be intimidating as a new player trying to navigate around the unique strategies that are completely different than what somebody who has been a seasonal player may be used to.  In the 2015 Fantasy Alarm NFL Draft Guide we offer an entire playbook on how to be successful in the Daily Fantasy world.

Draft Guide: Intro to DFS

By Jeff Mans

We are all stuck in our ways when it comes to things that we like and enjoy. I still pop popcorn on the stove. I love the bumps and skips of vinyl records. I will always, and I mean always, put ketchup on my hot dog. The ballpark on the south side of Chicago will always be known as Comiskey Park.

Still, I can’t deny that my hand will find its way into a bag of microwave popcorn. I have ten times the number of CDs than I do vinyl records and 100 times the amount of music digitally saved in files on my computer. Mustard, pickles and occasionally chopped tomatoes on a hot dog are pretty damn good as well.

My point is that just because I love certain things doesn’t mean that the newer and improved versions aren’t great also. In fact, my parents taught me a very valuable lesson when I was young - you don’t know whether you like it until you actually try it.

So when it comes to fantasy football, we know that you love the seasonal version. After all, you made a genius decision to buy the Fantasy Alarm Draft Guide this year, so you are a very wise person. But why haven’t you tried playing daily fantasy football?

I ask this question to folks a lot and the answer I hear time and time again is that people “don’t even know where to start.” Indeed, the first time you do anything can appear quite complex and awfully intimidating. Think large water slides, roller coasters, new foods, social media…manscaping. These things can be intimidating, but they can greatly improve your well-being once you try it and get the hang of them. I feel the same way about daily fantasy football.

Sure, there is nothing wrong with seasonal fantasy football. It’s easy, fun and makes the workday pass by a lot faster. But DFS can supplement and elevate the overall fantasy football experience. So let’s give it a try, shall we?

Here is a simple way of getting started playing daily fantasy football. Some of these things may seem very simplistic, but people often ignore them when beginning their DFS journey.

Get Comfortable

Don’t deposit a single dollar before you are comfortable with the website layout, the interface and the scoring format. You should be testing these sites out for things such as basic layout, formatting, organization, ease of use, account setup and bankroll management.

Play For Free

Most sites offer free contests every single week, so it is strongly suggested that you take advantage of these before you make a deposit. You need to get used to the lineup construction, scoring system and general gameplay of the site you choose to play on before you start investing any of your money. Also, get used to how long it takes to build and manage your lineups during this time as it will greatly help you down the road.
