Welcome into the realm of Fantasy Football analysis where the focus is on unearthing information that will help your Fantasy Football team gain an advantage over of the competition. Each week, I will dig through the data, so you donât have to, to provide a deeper explanation of what happened, uncover why those things happened, and whether we should expect those things to continue to happen.
Some may be surprised that the Tennessee Titans beat a more heralded Steelers team, but this games had the makings of an upset written all over it, as the Steelers continue to deal with some injuries to key players, while it appears that some of the Titans key players are getting healthy including Kenny Britt. Add in the fact that Pittsburgh was playing on the road, in front of a riled up crowd, on national TV. All reasons why I stayed away from this game in my Pick'em contests, (To see what teams I picked for this week follow me on twitter @FantasyNomad). And, for you Fantasy Football players here is a look at some in-depth stats from Thursday night's game:Tennessee TitansRunning Back Chris Johnson played 64 snaps to Jamie Harper's three, and Darius Reynaud's five. I've said it all year if you get Chris Johnson around 20 carries or more he has shown that he usually produces around a hundred yards, as he proved Thursday night. Johnson rushed for 98 yards on 19 carries. Unfortunately, Jamie Harper vultured a touchdown in this game. Harper had just two carries for one yard, but one of them resulted in a touchdown after Johnson failed to get in the end zone on the previous play. I wouldn't worry too much that Harper will cut into Johnson's production going forward, and hopefully the Titans coaching staff "Gives Johnson the Dam Ball," more going forward. Johnson was also targeted four times out of the backfield for four receptions and 23 yards receiving.
Thursday night also saw the return on Kenny Britt to Fantasy Relevancy (47 snaps) as he had four receptions for 62 yards and the Titans only receiving touchdown on 11 targets. Nate Washington (57 snaps to lead all Titans WR's) was targeted nine times, but only hauled in three of them (two drops) for 57 yards. Kendall Wright (33 snaps) was right behind Britt in targets with eight, but Wright caught six of those eight passes (one drop) for 71 yards. Rounding out the receiving contributions were WR Damian Williams (26 snaps) two receptions on three targets for 14 yards, TE Jared Cook (45 snaps) had four catches on four targets for 54 yards and no touchdown and his counterparts TE Craig Stevens (47 snaps) had only one catch, on two targets, for just four yards., and TE Taylor Thompson (15 snaps) one reception on one target for five yards. QB Matt Hasselbeck finished the night 25 completions on 44 attempts (48 drop backs) totaling 290 yards passing, one touchdown, one interception, and a 75.0 NFL Passer Rating, not overly impressive Fantasy wise, but Hasselbeck could serve as a viable Fantasy Option in the next few weeks as the Titans face the Bills (allowing most pts. to QB's), Colts (an average pass defense), and the Dolphins (allowing the fourth most yards passing in the NFL) in three of the next four weeks before going on a bye.Pittsburgh SteelersIn his second game of the season, RB Rashard Mendenhall saw six less snaps then the previous week. And, even more disappointing was that Mendenhall, who had 14 carries for 81 yards and a touchdown in Week 5, only carried the ball six times Thursday night totaling just six yards, against a Titans defense that has allowed the third most Fantasy Points to a running back. Rookie RB Baron Batch (25 snaps) had 10 carries for 22 yards and a touchdown, and maybe the new handcuff for Mendenhall owners. Issac Redman (17 snaps, only five were running plays) carried the ball five times for 14 yards and no touchdowns. QB Ben Roethlisberger threw 40 times on 42 drop backs for 363 yards, one touchdown, and one interception with a season high 9.1 yds./att. Besides Mendenhall, WR Antonio Brown (50 snaps) also had a disappointing night despite leading the the team in targets with nine. Brown only caught four of the nine targets for a measly 20 yards. TE Heath Miller (was on the field for all 64 snaps) was second on the team with seven targets hauling in six of them for 67 yards and no touchdown. WR Emmanuel Sanders (43 snaps) had four receptions on six targets for 43 yards and and did not get in the endzone. Sanders is a player to keep an eye on in deeper PPR leagues if he continues to see an increase in targets, but he first needs to prove he can make more happen after the catch as he is only averaging about 33 yards receiving the last two games. The top Fantasy producing receiver for the Steelers Thursday night was Mike Wallace (50 snaps) who made the most happen on just two catches on four targets as he totaled 94 yards receiving and had the lone Pittsburgh receiving touchdown. A few other players got in the action in the passing game, but the only one of Fantasy relevance was RB Issac Redman who had four catches on four targets for a surprising 105 yards receiving.
