Week 14 has arrived and with it comes another edition of Waiver Flavor. As we get deeper into the fantasy seasons we begin to see many familiar faces on this list as it takes a real hot stretch to really see ownership levels jump. So with that said let’s take a look at some guys who have continued to hit over the past few weeks and should be added if you find yourself needing an upgrade in a particular position.
Catcher
10-Team League
J.T. Realmuto, MIA – Realmuto appears on this list just about every other week as he is just 65 percent owned in standard leagues despite being ranked among the top five catchers in fantasy in most formats. On the year he is hitting .325 with 30 runs, five home runs, 25 RBI and seven stolen bases. He is likely going to be the only catcher that can offer you double-digit stolen bases while flirting with double-digit home runs. His batting average has him ranking among the league leaders at the position and he hits in a favorable spot in the Marlins lineup which should help his counting stats. Check your roster because I find it hard to believe that Realmuto would not be an upgrade for you at the catcher position if you are in one of the 35 percent of leagues that he is not owned.
12-Team League
Travis d'Arnaud, NYM - d’Arnaud finds himself owned in just under 25 percent of standard leagues but his offensive upside makes him more than worthy of being owned in 12-team leagues, especially if you are using two catchers. Over the last week he is hitting .471 with four runs, one home run and four RBI. In 2015 he hit .268 with 31 runs, 12 home runs and 41 RBI over 239 at-bats. As we have just about half a season left it’s possible that d’Arnaud could put up some decent power numbers if his production in limited at-bats last season is any sort of indicator of his ability.
15-Team League
Sandy Leon, BOS - We are really stretching it here but Leon has taken over as the Red Sox starting catcher with Christian Vasquez demoted to Triple-A, Blake Swihart currently on the DL and only veteran Ryan Hannigan on the roster. Hannigan figures to be knuckleballer Steven Wright’s personal catcher which would leave Leon to catch the rest of the staff. Leon has been on fire with the bat over the last month, hitting .477 with eight runs, one home run and nine RBI. He is going to hit at the bottom of the Red Sox lineup but seeing as Boston leads the league in hitting that should still present Leon with plenty of opportunities to produce. Leon has long been more of a defensive catcher than an offensive catcher but in deeper leagues you should be looking to ride out this hot streak while you can.
First Base
10-Team League
Wil Myers, SD - I would like to be in the leagues that Wil Myers is not owned just to see these rosters as he finds himself available in 10 percent of standard leagues, and while I know that 10 percent may not seem like a lot to most, the fact is that Myers is the No. 1-ranked first baseman in fantasy which deserves 100 percent ownership. On the year he is hitting .290 with 58 runs, 19 home runs, 58 RBI and 13 stolen bases which puts him on pace for a season which looks something like 90 runs, 30 home runs, 90 RBI and 20 stolen bases as a first baseman. If you are reading this and notice that Myers is on your waiver wire, I give you permission to stop reading and go pick him up immediately and once he is safely on your roster come back and finish reading.
12-Team League
Carlos Santana, CLE - Santana has been tearing it up of late, hitting .360 with six runs, three home runs and four RBI over the last seven days. The Indians' designated hitter finds himself owned in just 80 percent of standard leagues despite being on pace for career highs in most of the counting stats, including home runs, runs and RBI. His 19 home runs to this point in the year matches his season total from last year and is just eight short of his career high of 27 home runs which he has done twice since 2011. What’s even more impressive about Santana’s season is that he owns a lowly .235 BABIP which is below his career .267 number which means he should be even better in the second half for his fantasy owners.
15-Team League
C.J. Cron, LAA – Cron is one of the hottest hitters in all of baseball over the past week as he hit .464 with eight runs, five home runs and 13 RBI over the last seven days. He is owned in just 20 percent of standard leagues so he is more than likely floating around the wire. Cron has some real power but was rather inconsistent for most of the season until this recent surge so those in deeper leagues should definitely grab him. But know that he is unlikely to continue to have multi-homer games at the rate he is having them at.
Second Base
10-Team League
Brian Dozier, MIN - Dozier is owned in 90 percent of standard leagues but considering he has been among fantasy baseball's top second basemen over the past few years and is playing like it I would have figured it would be higher. After a slow start some owners cut bait but he hit an impressive .369 with 19 runs, eight home runs, 21 RBI and three stolen bases during the month of June which really helped spike his stats. While Dozier is certainly not a .369 hitter, he is more than capable of hitting around .240 with 20-plus home run power and the ability to swipe double-digit bases which is more than valuable in any league format.
12-Team League
Danny Espinosa, WSH - It was just a few weeks ago where I made a quip about every fantasy owner needing to buy into a Danny Espinosa hot streak at least once in their career. Well, the joke is apparently on me for those owners who took that advice as Espinosa is absolutely raking at the dish, hitting .407 with eight runs, five home runs and 15 RBI over the last week. He has shown in prior seasons that he is a threat to reach the 20-homer plateau and with 18 home runs before the All-Star break he could find himself approaching 30 home runs this season if he continues to hit at a competent level. Espinosa is a career .232 hitter but the Nationals can live with that if he is providing this type of offensive production when he puts the ball in play. He is currently owned in just 50 percent of standard leagues so check your wire and pick him up while he’s playing like one of the best in fantasy.
15-Team League
Brock Holt, BOS – The “Brockstar” is a unique fantasy player given his ability to play three or more positions depending on your league’s position eligibility rules. He won the Red Sox starting left field job out of spring training and got off to a hot start before a minor slump and ultimate injury landed him on the shelf. Since his return to the Red Sox lineup he has hit .353 with six runs, one home run and three RBI over four games. He is owned in just 25 percent of leagues but given his position versatility he is worth grabbing in deeper league formats as he will get a chance to hit in the league’s top lineup.
Shortstop
10-Team League
Eduardo Nunez, MIN - Nunez is currently ranked among the top five shortstops in fantasy this season yet is owned in just 80 percent of leagues. He is hitting .316 with 43 runs, 11 home runs, 35 RBI and 19 stolen bases for the Twins and over the last week he is hitting .364 with seven runs, one home run, six RBI and one stolen base. He finds himself on pace to flirt with a 20 home run/30 stolen base season which is fairly rare to see these days (nevermind having it come at the shortstop position). Check the wire and if Nunez is there go and pick him up.
12-Team League
Jose Reyes, NYM – Reyes made his return to the Mets on Tuesday night as he played third base and hit leadoff. Reyes went 0-for-4 at the dish but given that he figures to see every day playing time and showed last year that he still can be a productive fantasy asset, he is worth owning in 12-man leagues. Fantasy owners should not be expecting an All-Star version of Reyes in his second stint with the Mets but he should hit a few home runs and swipe some bases which is more than useful at the shortstop position. It’s also worth noting that he will be gaining third base eligibility which only helps his value.
15-Team League
Didi Gregorius, NYY – Gregorius is enjoying his second season in the Bronx as his nine home runs have already tied his career high and he finds himself on pace to set new career totals in runs, RBI and stolen bases as well. He is currently owned in 25 percent of standard leagues but in deeper mixed league and AL-Only formats he is certainly worth an add at the shortstop position.
Third Base
10-Team League
Jake Lamb, ARI - Lamb stays on this list for another week as his ownership levels are still below 80 percent despite the fact that he ranks among the top five third basemen in fantasy to this point in the season. Overall, he is hitting .292 with 47 runs, 19 home runs, 59 RBI and three stolen bases which rank him among the league leaders at his position. Over the past week he has hit six runs, three home runs and seven RBI which is fairly consistent production for him on a weekly basis. Check your waiver wire and add Lamb if he is there because he is already having a breakout season.
12-Team League
Maikel Franco, PHI - Franco entered the year with plenty of hype and it was for good reason as he was coming off a solid 2015 campaign. He has been a bit inconsistent during the first half of this year which has resulted in a drop in ownership however he is hitting .435 with five runs, three home runs and seven RBI over the last week which should put him on many owners’ radar. Franco was considered one of the top hitting prospects in the minor leagues and if he is truly turning around his season he will be a player you will want to own. Overall this season Franco is hitting .261 with 31 runs, 16 home runs and 48 RBI for the Phillies.
15-Team League
Yangervis Solarte, SD – Solarte is owned in just 15 percent of standard leagues but that number is surely to be on the rise thanks to his recent production as he is hitting .429 with five runs, two home runs and four RBI over the last week. He also has position eligibility at second base and first base which only adds to his overall value. The Padres' offense is fairly solid and with Solarte hitting in the middle of the lineup he should have plenty of RBI and run scoring opportunities which makes him a grab snag in deeper mixed and NL-only leagues.
Outfield
10-Team League
Odubel Herrera, PHI – Herrera is another young player that finds himself having a career year. He is currently ranked among the top 20 outfielders in fantasy thanks to his .302 average with 48 runs, 10 home runs, 32 RBI and 12 stolen bases. While in recent seasons being the Phillies' leadoff hitter has not been too beneficial, Herrera has been able to fill out the stat sheet on his own thanks to his power and speed abilities. Things should only get better for Herrera as it looks like Franco is in for a big second half which should lead to some additional run scoring opportunities if he can get on base in front of him. Herrera is owned in just about 80 percent of standard leagues so check your waiver wire and see if this duel threat outfielder is available.
12-Team League
Shin-Soo Choo, TEX – Choo has been on fire since coming off the disabled list and over the past two weeks he is hitting .300 with 12 runs, six home runs, 10 RBI and two stolen bases. He is currently hitting leadoff for the Rangers which should provide plenty of run scoring and his ability to still hit for power is something that his fantasy owners have to be thrilled to see. Choo is owned in just about 60 percent of standard leagues but he is more than capable of being a top producing outfielder when healthy.
15-Team League
Peter Bourjos, PHI – Bourjos has come out of nowhere to be one of the hottest waiver claims over the past few weeks. He hit an incredible .410 with 11 runs, two home runs and eight RBI during the month of June and is starting off July going 8-for-18 (.444) with six runs, home run and one RBI. While this level of production is certainly going to end at some point, Bourjos did have a season where he hit 12 home runs and stole 22 bases for the Angels back in 2011 and in limited roles during his career he has shown the ability to hit for some pop while swiping a handful of bases so if the Phillies are committed to giving him a full-time job it’s possible that a double-digit home run and stolen base season can still be had.
Starting Pitchers
10-Team League
Tanner Roark, WSH – Roark has been impressive over his last three starts, going 1-1 with three quality starts, a 2.11 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP while striking out 16 over 21.1 innings. On the year he is 7-5 with a 2.93 ERA but draws a favorable start on Wednesday against the Brewers who are a better hitting team at home, but will be traveling to Washington to play the Nationals which should give Roark the advantage.
12-Team League
Junior Guerra, MIL – Guerra is owned in just over 40 percent of leagues but the man has been nearly unhittable over his last three starts in which he is 3-0 with a 0.81 ERA and a 0.63 WHIP while having struck out 22 over 22.1 innings. He has allowed just nine hits over these three games which included matchups against the Nationals, Dodgers and A’s. His next start will come on Sunday against the Cardinals who he picked up a quality start against back in May.
15-Team League
Anthony DeSclafani, CIN - DeSclafani turned in a respectable rookie season in 2015 which saw him go 9-13 with a 4.05 ERA over 184.2 innings. He began this season on the disabled list but has since gone 2-0 with a 1.78 ERA over his first five starts this season while striking out 23 over 30.1 innings. He is available in just over 60 percent of leagues and is certainly worth adding in deeper league formats. He has a really tough draw for his next start as he faces the Cubs in Wrigley Field on Wednesday.
Closers
10-Team League
Cody Allen, CLE – Allen is owned in about 90 percent of standard leagues but has picked up 18 saves this season with a 3.03 ERA while striking out 43 over 35.2 innings. Allen was among the top closers heading into last year and he did not disappoint as he locked down 35 saves for the Indians. Cleveland has one of the league’s best pitching staffs which should continue to lead to plenty of save opportunities for Allen.
12-Team League
Will Harris, HOU – Harris owns a 0.72 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP this season yet is owned in just under 60 percent of standard leagues. He has saved nine games for the Astros who are having a bit of a down year when compared to 2015 but Harris is one of the best relievers in baseball this year and should be in line for some more save opportunities in the second half as the Astros are a bit too talented to be struggling.
15-Team League
Brandon Kintzler, MIN – The Twins have turned to Kintzler as their closer with Perkins injured and Jepsen getting DFA’d. The Twins likely won’t offer too many save chances but Kintzler has converted all four opportunities while owning a 2.19 ERA and a 0.89 WHIP while striking out 16 over 24.2 innings this season.
