Fantasy Baseball RPV Breakdown: Five Hidden DFS Infield Gems
Published: Jul 06, 2016
Baseball, more than any other sport, is tied to streaks. Despite it being a team game, hitters and pitchers are judged on their individual performances. A player’s confidence level, whether trending positively or negatively, can have a significant impact on their performance. Even with a great tool like Relative Position Value per Dollar (RPVPD), we can sometimes put too much stock in the larger sample rather than the current trend. After all, what is daily fantasy if not current? Understanding how to exploit a player’s current productivity before the salary adjusts is a great way to build value into your lineup.
Last week I targeted Tyler Naquin, Lonnie Chisenhall, Coco Crisp, Khris Davis and Shin-Soo Choo in the outfield, all of whom continued to be terrific values. Now, here are five infielders whose current streaks are outperforming their season average point totals and salaries you can use to your advantage.
1) C.J. Cron, 1B, LAA $2.7K FanDuel
Cron was viewed as a potentially useful utility bat in season-long leagues heading into this season, but his DFS appeal has been lacking over his career. Well, last week may have been a turning point for that logic. Over his last seven games Cron is slashing a tremendous .464/.500/1.036 line with five home runs and 13 RBI and just three strikeouts. Four of those dingers came in two games, but clearly he’s seeing beach balls when he steps to the plate right now. With many elite level first baseman carrying $4K-plus salaries, Cron is a fantastic cost-efficient alternative while he’s in a zone.
2) Adrian Gonzalez, 1B, LAD $2.7K FanDuel
Another first baseman starting to come out of his funk is the Dodgers’ Gonzalez. Early in 2015, Gonzalez was on a huge power surge, but his 2016 start has been lackluster. On the year he’s averaging just under 8.5 PPG on FanDuel, but over his last eight games that average has shot up to 12.5 very quietly. He also has five walks to just two strikeouts over that time which means he’s seeing the ball well and no longer pressing. That’s a great sign that he’ll start to drive good pitches out of the ballpark very soon. Gonzalez is known for hitting homers in bunches over his career and it appears we may see a basket full before the break.
3) Kendrys Morales, 1B, KC $2.8K FanDuel
All of a sudden first base is value city! Add Morales to this crew and you have yet another professional hitter who’s come out of a first half funk. Over his last 10 games, Morales has doubled his season-long PPG average of 9.7 to 20.9. He has seven home runs and 13 RBI over that period and is straight raking right now in the middle of the Royals lineup. Historically, Morales has always made good contact, so even if the power tapers off a bit in this last week before the break, he’ll still return strong value for that salary range.
4) Addison Russell, SS, CHC $2.5K FanDuel
With a 17-point average over his last seven games, Russell is becoming a very tantalizing DFS option as we approach the All Star break. His five BB to just three K over his last seven games are also a very positive trend and his power has never been questioned. The Cubs' lineup has been one of the most productive all season long and Russell is starting to finally join the party. His recent plate discipline is a very encouraging indicator that he can keep this pace up. Considering his price still sits in the same range as Erick Aybar and Andrelton Simmons right now, it’s nearly impossible not to consider Russell at SS.
5) Danny Espinosa, 2B, WAS $3.2K FanDuel
Normally I’d recommend steering clear of Espinosa, whose on-base skills are greatly lacking. Not to mention oh so many strikeouts. However, right now he’s hitting .400 over his last seven games with five homers and 15 RBI. Granted his outputs on FanDuel have ranged from 50-plus twice to single digits, but Espinosa has always been a player with boom-or-bust potential. In a tournament lineup, he has the potential to go off and be a difference maker under his current hot streak. Strike while the iron is hot, before the strikeouts relegate him back to the “unusable” rankings.
