The run allowed by Johnson was unearned, after Chris Davis was charged with an error, but since he was the last pitcher on the mound he was credited with the loss, despite a solid pitching performance. (4/6/13)
(SU) Pedro Strop (R)âPitched a scoreless ninth inning on Friday in a non-save situation retiring all three batters he faced in order striking out one. This was a much better showing from Strop than in his previous three-run performance, so hopefully he is starting to get on track for those of yo in holds leagues. (4/5/13)
(MR) Luis Ayala (R)âPicked up the win on Friday after pitching 1.2 innings of relief giving up two hits while striking out one batter. Due to his high pitch count in this contest, 30 pitches, Ayala will likely be unavailable out on the Orioles bullpen for Saturday nightâs game against the Twins. (4/5/13)
Boston Red Sox
(CL) Solid Joel Hanrahan (R)âRecorded his second save of the season on Friday after pitching a scoreless ninth inning giving up one walk while striking out one batter. Hanrahan has many doubters prior to the season, considering he only had one good season with the Pirates, but he has proved them wrong so far this year through his first three appearances with the Red Sox. (4/5/13)
(SU) Andrew Bailey (R)âEarned his second hold of the season Friday after pitching a scoreless eighth inning giving up one hit and one walk while striking out one batter. He needed 19 pitches to get through the appearance in which 11 went over the plate for strikes. (4/5/13)
(MR) Koji Uehara (R)âPicked up his second hold of the season Friday after pitching a scoreless sixth inning striking out two batters. Uehara was lights out needing only nine pitches to retire the side, and like the rest of the back end of the Red Sox bullpen, he canât be happier with the way that he is pitching right now. (4/5/13)Chicago White Sox(CL) Solid Addison Reed (R)âRecorded his third save of the season on Saturday after pitching yet another scoreless ninth inning. Reed has looked great so far in 2013 giving up just one walk and zero hits through his first three appearances, and appears to have a strong hold on the closer role at this point. (4/6/13)
(SU) Matt Thornton (L)âPicked up his third hold of the season on Saturday despite giving up one run on two hits in the eighth inning. The run cam via a Michael Saunder long ball, which scored two, but Thornton was only credited with one run in the appearance. (4/6/13)
(MR) Jesse Crain (R)âEarned his second hold of the season on Saturday after pitching 0.2 innings of relief giving up one walk while striking out one batter on 12 pitches thrown. Crain entered the game after Matt Thornton was unable to get the job done, and found and was able to escape unharmed to notch the hold. (4/6/13)
Cleveland Indians
(CL) Solid Chris Perez (R)âWas charged with his first blown-save of the season on Wednesday after giving up a home run in the ninth inning to Jose Bautista. The home run forced the game to move into extra innings, ultimately leading to an Indians victory. (4/3/13)
(SU) Vinnie Pestano (R)âPicked up his second hold of the season on Wednesday after retiring all three batters he faced in order in the eighth inning. Pestano has looked sharp through his first two appearances in 2013 and has a legitimate shot at taking over the closer role if Perez suffers an injury or endures a stretch of bad games. (4/3/13)
(MR) Bryan Shaw (R)âPitched two innings of relief on Friday night giving up one run while striking out three batters on 23 pitches thrown. Shaw has pitched well through his first few appearances with the Indians, and should continue to be used in meaningful spots, for those of you in holds leagues. (4/5/13)Detroit Tigers(CL) Committee Joaquin Benoit (R)âPitched a scoreless ninth inning on Saturday in a non-save situation retiring all three batters he faced in order. With the signing of Jose Valverde, Benoit's fantasy value may be short lived once he is ready to join the big league club, so fantasy owners should start making a backup plan for when it does happen. (4/6/13)
(CL) Committee Phil Coke (L)âWas charged with the loss and his first blown-save of the season on Wednesday after giving up one run on two hits in the ninth inning. He recorded just one out before giving up a game-winning double to Eduardo Escobar, which resulted in two runners crossing home plate. (4/3/13)
(CL) Committee Octavio Dotel (R)âMade his season debut on Thursday retiring both batters he faced to end the sixth inning. Dotel is expected to be a part of the Tigers closer committee to start the season, but with the recent signing of Jose Valverde, the committee may be short-lived. (4/4/13)
Houston Astros
(CL) Shaky Jose Veras (R)âPitched a scoreless ninth inning on Friday night in a non-save situation giving up one walk on 18 pitches thrown. This is going to be a long season for Veras owners, as the Astros continues to struggle scoring runs, so expect to see a lot of ânon-save situationsâ from him moving forward. (4/5/13)
(SU) Josh Fields (R)âRetired the only batter he faced in the seventh inning on Wednesday on four pitches forcing a fly ball out. Through two appearances this season, Fields has looked sharp and has yet to give up an earned run. (4/3/13)
(MR) Rhiner Cruz (R)âPitched 1.2 innings of relief on Friday giving up three hits and one walk in the appearance. He threw 38 pitches, which is pretty high for a reliever, so donât expect to see him used in relief on Saturday. (4/5/13)
Kansas City Royals
(CL) Solid Greg Holland (R)âTook the loss and was charged with his first blown-save of the season on Saturday after walking the bases loaded in the ninth inning and giving up a game-winning three-run double. Holland threw 26 pitches in this appearance and may get a day off on Sunday to shake this one off. (4/6/13)
(SU) Aaron Crow (R)âEarned his second hold of the season on Saturday after pitching a 1-2-3 seventh inning. He needed 14 pitches to get through the appearance forcing two ground ball outs while striking out one batter, to remain perfect on the season. (4/6/13)
(MR) Kelvin Herrera (R)âPicked up his second hold of the season on Saturday after pitching a scoreless eighth inning retiring all three batters he faced in order. He struck out two batters in the appearance, which brings his total strikeouts to  six on the year in three innings of work. (4/6/13)Los Angeles Angels(CL) Shaky Ernesto Frieri (R)âServed up a home run to Nelson Cruz in a non-save situation in the ninth inning of Saturday's win over the Rangers, but was able to limit the damage to secure an Angels win. Frieri struck out two batters in the contest, and now has four strikeouts in two innings of relief this season and should get a few more save chances down the road before Ryan Madson's return. (4/6/13)
(SU) Sean Burnett (L)âPitched a scoreless seventh inning on Saturday giving up one hit while striking out two batters. He needed 20 pitches to get through the appearance striking out two batters while forcing one fly ball out to work through the inning. (4/6/13)
(MR) Scott Downs (L)âTook the loss on Friday after giving up one run on two hits in  one inning of work. Downs has now taken a loss in back-to-back games and hasnât been able to get it going early on this season. (4/5/13)
Injured:  Ryan Madson (Elbow)Minnesota Twins(CL) Solid Glen Perkins (L)âRecorded his first save of the season Saturday after pitching a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Perkins looked good in this contest, needing only 12 pitches to force one ground ball out and two fly ball outs to seals the win for the Twins. (4/6/13)
(SU) Jared Burton (R)âEarned his first hold of the season on Thursday after pitching a scoreless eighth inning giving up one walk while striking out one batter. Burton, who earned a handful of saves in 2012, is expected to stay in the setup role while Glen Perkins is pitching well, so currently he only has value in holds leagues. (4/4/13)
(MR) Casey Fien (R)âTook the loss and are charged with his first blow-save of the season after surrendering four runs on three hits and one walk in the eighth inning. After Fienâs departure Chris Davis hit a grand slam, and he was credited with the runs that scored, so he was unable to escape  a disastrous outing. (4/5/13)New York Yankees(CL) Elite Mariano Rivera (R)âRecorded his first save since injury his knee early last season, despite giving up one run on one hit and one walk in the ninth inning. It wasnât a clean outing for Rivera, who hadnât pitched in a regular season game in almost one year, but he kept his composure and sealed the deal in the Yankees first win. (4/4/13)
(SU) David Robertson (R)âMade his season debut Friday afternoon pitching a scoreless eighth inning needing only four pitches to get the job done. Robertson forced one ground ball out and two fly ball outs  while throwing three first-pitch strikes. (4/5/13)
(MR) Boone Logan (R)âPitched 0.1 innings of relief Saturday allowing one run to score on two hits allowed. Logan has been unimpressive in the Yankees last two games, and may get a day off on Sunday after pitching back-to-back days. (4/6/13)Oakland Athletics(CL) Shaky Grant Balfour (R)âRecorded his first save of the season Saturday after pitching a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Balfour looked sharp in this contest, forcing two fly ball outs and one strikeout on just 12 pitches thrown. (4/6/13)
(SU)Â Ryan Cook(R)âPicked up his first hold of the season Saturday after retiring all three batters he faced in order in the eighth inning. Cook appears to have worked out the issues we saw on Opening Day, and has now put together back-to-back terrific outings. (4/6/13)
(MR) Sean Doolittle (L)âEarned his first hold of the season Saturday after pitching a scoreless seventh inning. He needed just 10 pitched to get through the appearance forcing three fly ball outs, bringing his scoreless innings streak to three innings after this performance. (4/6/13)Seattle Mariners(CL) Solid Tom Wilhelmsen (R)âRecorded his second save of the season Friday night despite giving up one run on one hit and three walks. Walks are starting to become an issue for Wilhelmsen, now with four free passes on the year, but at least he was able to work out of the jam to notch a save for his fantasy owners. (4/5/13)
(SU) Stephen Pryor (R)âWas used in the eighth inning on Saturday retiring all three batters he faced in order. Pryor has emerged as a solid setup man out of the Mariners bullpen, and if Tom Wilhemlsen's recent struggles were to become the norm, we may see him take over the closer role before season's end. (4/6/13)
(MR) Charlie Furbush (L)âPitched o.2 innings of relief on Saturday retiring both batters he faced on just eight pitches thrown. Like Stephen Pryor, Furbush is also perfect on the season and has transitioned well into a relief pitcher, becoming the primary lefty out of the Mariners bullpen. (4/6/13)Tampa Bay Rays(CL) Elite Fernando Rodney (R)âDespite being charged with his first blown-save of the season Wednesday, Rodney escaped with the win. He gave up one run on one hit and one walk, which tied the game at seven, but Matt Joyceâs game-winning home run gave Rodney owners something to smile about in the bottom half of the inning. (4/3/13)
(SU) Jake McGee (L)âPitched a scoreless frame on Friday night retiring all three batters he faced in order. McGee jumped all over the batters, throwing first pitch strikes to each one, and was able to bounce back nice from a horrible showing on Tuesday when he gave up five earned runs.
(MR) Joel Peralta (R)âWas used in the eighth inning on Saturday needing only four pitches to record two outs. Despite pitching on back-to-back days, Peralts should be available to pitched, if needed, on Saturday due to his low pitch count the last two games. (4/6/13)Texas Rangers(CL) Elite Joe Nathan (R)âRecorded his first save of the season Friday after pitching a scoreless ninth inning. Nathan allowed one base runner in the appearance and forced three fly ball outs, luckily for him the fly balls stayed in the yard, but it could turn into a problem if that trend continues. (4/5/13)
(SU) Jason Frasor (R)âHad a rough outing on Saturday, surrendering two home runs in the six inning. The long balls came off the bats of Peter Bourjos and Albert Pujols, but Angels already had a lead, but this will definitely be a game that Frasor will want to forget. (4/6/13)
(MR) Tanner Scheppers (R)âPicked up the win on Friday after pitching a scoreless eighth inning retiring all three batters he faced in order. Scheppers has looked good in his first two outings of the season, allowing just one hit, and may become a solid source for holds before seasonâs end.
Injuredâ Joakim Soria (Elbow)Toronto Blue Jays(CL) Shaky Casey Janssen (R)âRecorded his first save of the season on Thursday after pitching a 1-2-3 ninth inning striking out two batters. Janssen needed only 12 pitches to get through the appearance, and has looked good in his first two appearance of the season, but has now pitched back-to-back days, so expect Sergio Santos to be used in a save situation if one arises on Friday. (4/4/13)
(SU) Sergio Santos (R)âPitched a scoreless ninth inning on Saturday in a non-save situation giving up one hit on 14 pitches thrown. Santos looked solid in this outing striking out one batter while forcing one ground ball out and one fly ball out to get the job done. (4/6/13)
(MR) Steve Delabar (R)âPicked up his first hold of the season on Saturday after being used to get five outs, starting in the sixth inning. He retired all four batters he faced in order, striking out two to remain perfect on the season. (4/6/13)National LeagueArizona Diamondbacks(CL) Solid J.J. Putz (R)âNotched his first save of the season on Friday night after pitching a scoreless ninth inning. He struck out two batters while forcing the other batter to ground out on 17 pitches thrown, continuing to prove why he still deserves to be considered near the top of the closer rankings in the National League. (4/5/13)
(SU) David Hernandez (R)âPicked up his first hold of the season Friday after pitching a scoreless eighth inning giving up one hit while striking out two. Quietly, Hernandez has become a solid contributor in the strikeout category, dating back to last season, and now has five strikeouts in three innings of work. (4/5/13)
(MR) Heath Bell (R)âPitched a scoreless seventh inning on Saturday giving up one hit on 12 pitches thrown. This was Bell's second appearance of the season, and looked much better than his first game, when he allowed three runs on four hits in 0.1 innings of work, but he still can not be trusted in close games. (4/6/13)Atlanta Braves(CL) Elite Craig Kimbrel (R)âRecorded his second save of the season on Friday night after pitching a 1-2-3 ninth inning. It was business as usual for Kimbrel needing only eight pitches to mow down the side, as he continues to prove why he is the best closer in all of baseball right now. (4/5/13)
(SU) Jordan Walden (R)âPitched a scoreless seventh inning on Thursday giving up one hit on 15 pitches thrown in the appearance. With Jonny Venters out for at least one month, Walden is going to be used, along with Eric OâFlaherty, in the teamâs setup role, which gives Walden value in holds leagues. (4/4/13)
(MR) Eric OâFlaherty (R)âWas credited with the win on Saturday after Carlos Marmol failed to seal the win for the Cubs, pitching a scoreless ninth inning. He gave up one hit and one walk, but was able to work out of the jam, and has now pitched back-to-back days. (4/6/13)
Injuredâ Jonny Venters (Elbow)Chicago Cubs(CL) Shaky Kyuji Fujikawa (R)âHad a rough outing on Saturday giving up three runs on four hits and one walk int he eighth inning. Despite getting hit around on Saturday, Fujikawa is in line to take over the closer role from Carlos Marmol, and it looks like the switch will be coming sooner than later. (4/6/13)(SU) Carlos Marmol (R)âThe nightmare continued for Marmol Saturday, giving up two home runs in the ninth inning to take the loss and blown-save. Marmol has now given up five runs in his three appearances this season, and it is hard to think the Cubs will continue to role with him as their closer much longer. (4/6/13)(MR) James Russell (L)âRetired the only batter he faced in the seventh inning on just four pitches thrown. Russell finished what Carlos Villanueva started in the inning, continuing to impress as the team's primary lefty reliever. (4/6/13)Cincinnati Reds(CL) Elite Aroldis Chapman (L)âPitched a scoreless 10th inning on Saturday in a non-save situation retiring all three batters he faced via strikeout. Chapman was straight dealing in this one, needing only 12 pitches, nine strikes, to mow down the opposition, bringing his punch out total to seven on the year. (4/6/13)
(SU) Jonathan Broxton (R)âPitched a scoreless ninth inning on Saturday retiring all three batter she faced in order. Like Aroldis Chapman, Broxton is perfect on the season and has emerged as the team's primary setup man with Sean Marshall sidelined with a shoulder ailment. (4/6/13)
(MR) Sean Marshall (L)âMarshall, who has yet to pitch this season, is dealing with shoulder fatigue but is expected to make it onto the mound at some point this weekend. Owners in holds leagues should not take the risk and leave him benched until we see him take the mound. (4/4/13)Colorado Rockies(CL) Solid Rafael Betancourt (R)âPitching for the second straight day, Betancourt recorded his third save of the season Saturday after pitching a scoreless ninth inning. Betancourt gave up one hit in the appearance, but was able to work around the base runner, forcing one ground ball out and one fly ball to end it. (4/6/13)
(SU) Rex Brothers (L)âPitched one inning of relief on Saturday allowing one run on two hits while striking out one batter. He needed 16 pitches to get through the appearance, and was able to limit the damage to just one run by forcing two ground ball outs. (4/6/13)
(MR) Wilton Lopez (R)âThrew just four pitches on Tuesday night in the ninth inning giving up one hit while forcing one fly ball out. Lopez has now been used in back-to-back games and may be given the day off on Wednesday. (4/2/13)Los Angeles Dodgers(CL) Shaky Brandon League (R)âRecorded his second save in as many days on Saturday after pitching a scoreless ninth inning. Now that he has pitched back-to-back days there is a chance he will be given the day off on Sunday, so owners should keep that in their minds while setting lineups today. (4/6/13)
(SU) Kenley Jansen (R)âPicked up his second hold on Saturday after recording the final tow outs of the eighth inning. Jansen has now pitched back-to-back days and will likely get the day off on Sunday. (4/6/13)
(MR) Ronald Belisario (R)âPitched 0.2 innings of relief on Tuesday forcing both batters he faced to ground out on 21 pitches thrown. Despite the high pitch count (21 pitches), we can expect Belisario to be available if needed on Wednesday. (4/2/13)Miami Marlins(CL) Solid Steve Cishek (R)âPitching on back-to-back days, Cishek did not pitch well, giving up two runs on two hits and one walk in a non-save situation on Friday. The Marlins escaped with the win, but Cishek was close to making this game interesting. (4/5/13)
(SU) Jon Rauch (R)âPicked up his first hold of the season Friday after retiring both batters he faced in order in the seventh inning. He threw just eight pitches in the appearance, and may get a chance to close on Saturday after Cishek needed 30 pitches to close out the game in the ninth inning. (4/5/13)
(MR) Mike Dunn (L)âPitched 0.2 innings of relief on Thursday allowing two runs on two hits and one walk. This was a poor showing from Dunn, who needed 21 pitches to work through the appearance, with the damage coming off of a three-run home run by Jayson Werth in the seventh inning. (4/4/13)Milwaukee Brewers(CL) Solid John Axford (R)âAxfordâs struggled continued over into Wednesdayâs appearance surrendering three runs on five hits in the ninth inning. He allowed two home runs, which brings his total to three home runs allowed this season, so something has to change or else the Brewers will have to make a change. (4/3/13)
(SU) Jim Henderson (R)âPitched a scoreless eighth inning on Wednesday giving up two hits on 11 pitches thrown. He struck out one batter in the appearance while forcing one ground ball out to get the job done. (4/3/13)
(MR) Michael Gonzalez (L)âPitched 0.2 innings of relief Friday night giving up two walks while striking out two batters. Walks are starting to become an issue with Gonzalez  as he continues to get himself into jams, sooner or later it may cost him his job in the Brewers bullpen. (4/5/13)New York Mets(CL) Shaky Bobby Parnell (R)âWas used in a non-save situation in the ninth inning on Saturday retiring the side in order on 14 pitches thrown. This was just Parnell's second appearance on the year, and has yet to be used in a save situation, so it is tough to determine if he will be a fixture in the ninth inning for the foreseeable future. (4/6/13)
(SU) Brandon Lyon (R)âWas credited with the win on Saturday after pitching a scoreless eighth inning giving up one hit while striking out two batters. Through his first three appearance, Lyon has yet to give up a run and has allowed just one hit, as he tries to impress his new team. (4/6/13)
(MR) Josh Edgin (L)âAfter being used to get the final out in the seventh inning, Edgin was charged with his first blown-save of the season. Due to major league baseball scoring rules, Edgin was charged with a blown-save, despite not giving up a run, so don't look too much into this appearance. (4/6/13)
Injuredâ Frank Francisco (Elbow)Philadelphia Phillies(CL) Elite Jonathan Papelbon (R)âRecorded his first save of the season on Thursday after pitching a scoreless ninth inning retiring all three batters he faced in order. It was nice to see Papelbon bounce back from a poor showing in his season debut on Wednesday, as he appears to be back to normal moving forward. (4/4/13)
(SU) Mike Adams (R)âWas used in the eighth inning on Saturday night allowing one hit while striking out one batter on 24 pitches thrown. It wasn't the cleanest of outings, but Adams was able to work through a high pitch count and not allow any runs. (4/6/13)
(MR) Antonio Bastardo (L)âPicked up the win on Saturday night after pitching a scoreless ninth inning on a non-save situation. Greg Holland walked the bases loaded and then gave up a game-winning three-run double, which credited Bastardo with the win, so those in holds leagues got lucky with this one. (4/6/13)Pittsburgh Pirates(CL) Shaky Jason Grilli (R)âGrilli was lights out in his season debut on Wednesday retiring all three batters he faced in order, striking out two batters while forcing one ground ball out. He threw only nine pitches in the outing, so there is no question he will be available to work out of the Pirates bullpen on Thursday.
(SU) Mark Melancon (R)âPitched yet another scoreless inning of relief on Saturday giving up two hits in the eighth inning. Although he has yet to earn a hold this season, if Melancon keeps pitching like this, he is going to be a must-own in leagues that have holds as a category. (4/6/13)
(MR) Jared Hughes (R)âPitched 0.2 innings of relief Saturday giving up one hit in the sixth inning. Hughes entered the game after A.J. Burnett recorded the first out of the inning, and he was able to get through the inning, showing the Pirates that they can have confidence in him. (4/6/13)San Diego Padres(CL) Solid Huston Street (R)âRecorded his first save of the season on Thursday despite allowing a home run to John Buck in the ninth inning. One got away from Street in this one, which resulted in a long ball, but 9-or-11 pitches went over for strikes and he managed to hold onto the lead, so there are some positives to take form this appearance. (4/4/13)
(SU) Luke Gregerson (R)âPicked up his first hold of the season on Thursday after pitching 1.1 innings of relief. Gregerson was lights out in this appearance, striking out three of the four batters he faced, and has now struck out four batters in 2.1 innings of relief on the season. (4/4/13)
(MR) Dale Thayer (R)âPitched a scoreless eighth inning Saturday giving up one walk while striking out one batter. Walks have been an issue for Thayer through his first three appearances, giving up four free passes, which is not the way you want to start a season if you want to hold onto your job. (4/6/13)San Francisco Giants(CL) Solid Sergio Romo (R)âRecorded his third save of the season Friday after pitching a 1-2-3 ninth inning striking out one batter. Romo needed just 11 pitches to get through the appearance as he continues to become one of the most dominant ninth inning pitchers in all of baseball. (4/5/13)
(SU) Javier Lopez (L)âRecorded just one out in the ninth inning Saturday giving up one run on two hits. This was just his second appearance on the season and has now pitched only 0.2 innings of relief if you combine the two games in which he was used, so it is hard to tell how well he really is pitching. (4/6/13)
(MR) Santiago Casilla (R)âWas used to get the final two outs of the ninth inning Saturday in a non-save situation retiring both batters he faced in order. This was a much better outing for Casilla than his previous one, when he didn't record an out, but situations like this are what we will likely see Casilla work out of. (4/6/13)St. Louis Cardinals(CL) Solid Mitchell Boggs (R)âEarned his first save of the season on Saturday after pitching a scoreless ninth inning. Bogg had it going in this one, allowing just one hit while striking out one batter and forcing two fly ball outs to seal the win for the Cardinals. (4/6/13)
(SU) Edward Mujica (R)âPicked up his third hold of the season Saturday despite giving up one run on two hits in the eighth inning. Mujica served up a home run to Pablo Sandoval, but was able to put that behind him and escape the inning with the lead. (4/6/13)
(MR) Fernando Salas (R)âPicked up his first hold of the season Saturday after pitching a 1-2-3 seventh inning. Salas has been unable to show any consistency over the last few years, which has moved him down the depth chart, but he can still hold fantasy value for those in holds leagues. (4/6/13)
Injuredâ Jason Motte (Elbow)Washington Nationals(CL) Elite Rafael Soriano (R)âWas charged with his first blown-save of the season Saturday after giving up two runs on two hits in the ninth inning. Soriano had little control of his pitches in this contest, and gave up a home run to Shin-Soo Choo in the inning, with only 13 of his 22 pitches going over for strikes, so he will want to forget this one. (4/6/13)(SU) Drew Storen (R)âPitched one inning of relief on Saturday allowing one earned run on three hits while striking two batters in the eighth inning. Storen actually allowing two runs, but was only credited for one, but was able to work out of a jam and keep the Nationals ahead before Rafael Soriano let the lead slip away. (4/6/13)
(SU) Tyler Clippard (R)âPitched a scoreless seventh inning on Saturday retiring all three batters he faced in order. He struck out two batters while forcing one fly ball out on 11 pitches thrown to run his scoreless innings streak to three innings after this one.
