Fantasy Baseball Daily League Sleepers and Value Plays for May 9th

by Michael Pichan (@FantasyNomad)

In review of yesterday's recommendations, four of the six hitters I recommended went yard, and despite Anibal Sanchez allowing his first home run of the season, Sanchez did make his sixth consecutive quality start, allowing just two earned runs while striking out eight (third most of any pitcher Tuesday) and did not allow a walk, but unfortunately the Tigers could not mustard up more than one run of support.

  • P Doug Fister Tigers ($13,717, 13.7% of cap at Draft Street - Play Now) Many daily leaguers will roll with Angels Jason Vargas tonight, so I suggest you look elsewhere for two reasons: One) The Astros have been playing well of late and they just saw Vargas pitch on the 28th of April. Two) If you want to increase your chances of winning, especially in the larger contests, then you want to go against the grain a look for player(s) opposite the masses, and thus I recommend Tigers Doug Fister who is ranked just one spot higher in price than Vargas on Draft Street. Fister remains undefeated thus far at 4-0 and will be facing a Nationals team that has scored the third fewest runs in the National League on the season, are top five in strikeouts thus far in the month of May among NL teams, and the home run friendly Dan Haren toes the slab for the Nationals opposite Fister today.   (Game Time 4:05 pm est)
  • OF Josh Hamilton Angels ($8,182, 8.2 % of cap at  Daily Joust - Play Now): Most of you have been anxiously awaiting for Hamilton to break out of his month long slump, and if you had him in your line up Wednesday you would have benefited from his 10 point Fantasy score. Tonight looks like another opportunity to score with RHH Hamilton facing the LHP Lucas Harrell who allowed eight earned runs in his last outing. Hamilton is 46-for-134 (.343 avg.) with 11 home runs for his career on the road in Houston. (Game Time 8:10 pm est)

  • OF Cody Ross Diamondbacks ($4,700, 4.7% of cap at Star Street - Play Now): The RHH Cody Ross has been slotted in the clean up spot for the DBacks, behind the hot hitting Paul Goldschmidt, and the way Godly has been hitting it is likely Cole Hamels will pitch around Goldschmidt allowing Ross the potential for some RBI opportunities this evening. Ross has been able to cash in often against the lefty Cole Hamels in his career as he is 11-for-37 (.297) with five home runs, two doubles,  seven RBI, a stolen base, and three walks.  (Game Time 9:40 pm est)

  • 3B Manny Machado Orioles ($8,100, 8.1% of cap at Draft Day - Play Now): Third base is fairly shallow on a full day, and with fewer games today I stretch my definition of "value." Machado comes at hefty price tag on most sites today, but at Draft Day  he is listed as only the fourth most expensive third baseman, so you are getting "some" value for a player who has three home runs and a .345 average for the month of May. (Game Time 7:05 pm est)

  • 1B Freddie Freeman Braves ($7,810, 7.8% of cap at Daily Joust - Play Now): If you are looking for a discounted option at first base, who has had good success in a small sample size against opposing pitcher Ryan Vogelsong, than consider the LHH Freddie Freeman who is 3-for-7 off the righty Vogelsong with two of the three hits being home runs.  (Game Time 10:15 pm est)

  • SS Stephen Drew Red Sox ($5,900, 9.8% of cap at Fan Throwdown - Play Now): Drew looks like he has finally shaken off the rust that comes with missing over 150 games the last two years and is settling into a nice groove of late. Drew is tied for the lead among shortstops in RBI and  hits, and has the highest average and on-base percentage of any player at the position (with 20 or more at-bats) in the month of May. The LHH Stephen Drew and the Red Sox will be facing the righty Kevin Correia Thursday, and although on the surface it looks like Correia is having a decent year, he has a road ERA of 5.11. (Game Time 7:10 pm est)
  • SS Ruben Tejada Mets ($3,500, 3.5% of cap at Star Street - Play Now): Although Tejada's price has went up at Star Street it is still two to three percent cheaper then the other sites, but even at the other sites if you are looking for a discounted option at short stop Tejada will cost you only about six percent of your cap space. The RHH Tejada is 3-for-3 with an RBI and a steal against the LHP Pirates Jeff Locke.
