Thanks to the trade deadline, there are new closers everywhere! For some of those situations, us fantasy owners went scurrying to free agency chasing saves. This article features two guys that are now closing for their team, thanks to deals at the trade deadline. Your fantasy league’s deadline is likely approaching and even though you won’t make 18 moves like all of baseball did, a move or two may be necessary to getting your team to the promise land. Outside of the two closers in this article, there is Mitch Moreland out in Texas, who is absolutely white hot.

Tyler Thornburg, RP MIL— With Jeremey Jeffress and Will Smith being traded to Texas and San Francisco respectively, Thornburg figures to be the clear-cut front runner for saves in Milwaukee. Thornburg has been solid this year, posting a 2.32 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and a 12.45 K/9 in 42.2 innings pitched this season. His LOB% is at 83.3 percent and as long as his mentality doesn’t change, he should be poised for success as Milwaukee’s ninth inning man. Opponents are struggling against all of his pitches, but his bread-and-butter is that fastball of his. He throws it over 63 percent of the time and opposing batters have mustered a mere .180 average off that pitch. Thornburg’s changeup has been lethal, to the point of holding the opposition to a .095 batting average. Sure, Milwaukee’s offense isn’t as good without Lucroy so save opportunities could be tough to come by, but it’s not like they aren’t going to win any games the rest of the season. When they do win, they are going to be close games, which will leave the door wide open for Thornburg.
Jake Barrett, RP ARI— After the Brad Ziegler trade, Barrett was arguably second in line for the closing duties in Arizona, behind only Tyler Clippard. However, the Yankees, for some odd reason, traded for Clippard and Barrett walked through the open door. The 25-year-old righty has posted a 2.79 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 39 strikeouts over 28.2 innings this season. Barring any unforeseen statement from Arizona personnel, Barrett is going to be the team’s closer moving forward. It’s been a trying year for Arizona, but you need to add a closer when available, especially when the guy has plenty of potential. He’s recorded a strikeout in nine of his last 10 appearances, allowing just one run on seven hits and two walks in the process. His name isn’t going to jump off the screen by any means, but he has proven to be effective this season and that my friends, is what it takes to win some fantasy leagues.
Mitch Moreland, 1B TEX— Over the last seven days, Moreland is 10-for-22 with five home runs, six runs scored and nine RBI. Those numbers are good for a .455 batting average and a 1.136 slugging percentage. He’s been out of his mind over the past few games and the injury to Prince Fielder is going to give him an everyday gig the rest of the way. Moreland has logged four straight multi-hit efforts and for the time being, he’s one of the hottest hitters in all of baseball. In terms of batting average, he has no major split issues, but he’s only logged 67 at-bats against southpaws (compared to 230 against righties). 14 of his 18 home runs have come against righties, so it’s easy to see where the power lies. He’s owned in only 15 percent of ESPN fantasy leagues at this moment, so this is a good time to jump on the Moreland train, especially while he’s white hot.
