Shorter slate today, but still plenty to choose from so let’s not waste any time today and just get right to it. Another top-heavy day, if you ask me, and if you’re reading this, you are…asking me, that is. With just two early games today there was no need to split the slates. And away we go…

Chris Sale, CHW – The Astros have been swinging the sticks well lately, but I’m focusing on the steady 25.7-percent strikeout rate against southpaws this season. Sale is one of those elites whose talent transcends what the opposition’s offense has been doing lately, so I’m keeping him as the top option on the board.
Stephen Strasburg, WAS – While he hasn’t exactly been lights-out lately, Strasburg is running into an ice-cold Mets offense right now. The .264 wOBA and 66 wRC+ for the Mets over the last seven days ranks 29th in the league and they’re doing it with a miserable27.5-percent strikeout rate.
Jeff Samardzija, SF – The only team colder than the Mets right now is the Padres which bodes well for the Shark who has allowed just four runs over his last 23.2 innings (three starts). San Diego has a dismal .257 wOBA over the past week with a league-worst 59 wRC+ and a 22.1-percent strikeout rate. It also doesn’t hurt to mention that the Padres have a league-worst .273 wOBA versus righthanders this season and a 25.1percent strikeout rate to go with it.
Jason Hammel, CHC – I’m not totally in love with this match-up, but Hammel finally pitched into the seventh inning in his last start and he still minimizes the number of runs that come across. Five quality starts in his last seven outings is big and he’s 4-0 with a 1.01 ERA over his last four starts at Miller Park (5-0 with a 2.08 ERA over his last seven starts against Milwaukee). The Brewers are sitting on just a .300 wOBA over their last seven days, but more important is that miserable 28.7-percent strikeout rate their bringing along for the ride.
Marco Estrada, TOR – Even though his ground ball rate is at a career-best 42.9-percent right now, the fact that this game is in Minnesota makes me feel even better about using him. The Twins have just a .306 wOBA against righties this year and their usual 23.3-percent strikeout rate has jumped to 25.1-percent over the last week.
Josh Tomlin, CLE – We’re moving into slightly rougher waters here as the Reds bats woke up yesterday and the righties could pounce on Tomlin if he starts leaving pitches up in the zone for them. That HR/9 isn’t so sexy at a 1.78 mark. But still, the Reds woke up against a rookie making his debut and they still have a 27th-ranked .290 wOBA against righties this year with a strikeout rate that generally hovers around the 23-24-percent mark.
Jeff Locke, PIT – If you’ve been throwing down hurlers who face the Braves, then you may as well throw a dart at Locke. Atlanta has a league-worst .247 wOBA against southpaws with a 25-percent strikeout rate and should be stifled once again here. They bested Francisco Liriano yesterday, but still only managed to plate three runs for the night.
