While some of the names from which you have to choose today are fantastic, the match-ups just aren’t as tasty as you’d like. In fact, if you’re paying up for pitching, you should definitely be careful as usually stout-named hurlers seem primed for a bit of disappointment. Let’s take a look…

Clayton Kershaw, LAD – He’s obviously the best pitcher in the game and I’ve always said that some hurlers just transcend the numbers and the match-ups. Kershaw is one of them. The Diamondbacks are hitting well lately, have handled lefties well and even got to Kershaw when they faced him last year. I won’t be paying up for him today, but for those who just have to, be warned. As great as he always can be, he may not be the true Kershaw we know.

Johnny Cueto, SF – He’s been fantastic all year and his numbers at home are better than they are on the road. The Brewers’ bats are sitting right about league average against right-handers this season, but on the road, their .297 wOBA ranks 25th in the league. Let’s also not forget that they’ve posted a 26-percent strikeout rate against righties this year.

Noah Syndergaard, NYM – For me, he’s the No. 1 pitcher on the board. His talent transcends match-up numbers, but that won’t matter this time as the Pirates have produced a .261 wOBA with a .096 ISO and 22-percent strikeout rate over the last seven days. Ice cold, baby!

Marco Estrada, TOR – As Marcus Stroman showed yesterday, these Phillies are pretty punchless right now. With a .262 wOBA and a 28-percent strikeout rate over the last seven days, Estrada should breeze through this start and maybe even pull his K/9 over 8.00 for the year.

Adam Wainwright, STL – He’s got three quality starts over his last four outings and has pitched significantly better at home than he has on the road. The Astros are fanning 25-percent of the time against righties this season and over the last week, they’ve posted a .280 wOBA with a meek .108 ISO.

Ian Kennedy, KC – The Tribe is posting a .281 wOBA with a .112 ISO and 21.1-percent K-rate over the last week because they’re sitting on the road right now, a place where they just don’t do their best work. In fact, the Indians’ .289 road wOBA ranks 27th in the league and the strikeout rate jumps to 23-percent.

Patrick Corbin, ARI – If the D-Backs do get to Kershaw, like I feel they could, then Corbin could land the win, thus massively increasing his value in GPP play. Not only are the Dodgers posting a .286 wOBA with a 21-percent strikeout rate over the last seven days, but their .289 wOBA against southpaws all year ranks just 28th in the league.

Anthony DeSclafani, CIN – I usually like to pick against the Reds, but they’re facing renowned slumpbuster Bud Norris today. DeSclafani should be a nice GPP play facing a Braves team that posts a 29th-ranked .281 wOBA with a K-rate close to 20-percent against right-handers this year.
