Well, I’m back from the Gorge in Washington and I’ve got a few hours before Phish tears it up in San Francisco so I opted to throw down the pitching coach for you today. Not to worry as I am of very sound mind…at the moment. Jerry Colvin will be handling the pitching coach for the next two days as you certainly won’t want to hear from me in the middle of this three-night run, but I’ll be back in full force again Thursday.

Short slate today but all night games, so, thankfully, you’ve got an array of options. Here’s a look at the data and who I’m looking to play tonight.

Jose Fernandez, MIA – The biggest no-brainer on the board and a must-play for cash games. The Phillies were struggling against right-handers throughout the first half (.300 wOBA, 21% K-rate), but they came out for the second half ice-cold with a .211 wOBA, a 22% strikeout rate and a .085 ISO. Obviously, Fernandez is going to be a little pricey, but with the number of games on the slate, you should still be able to find plenty of complementary bargain bats.

Chris Sale, CHW – The Mariners have started the second half with a .300 wOBA, but that 31.4-percent strikeout rate is just what the doctor ordered for Sale and his owners. This will be the first time he faces them this year, but he owns a 2.74 ERA against them in three starts prior and was holding them to a .173 average.

Corey Kluber, CLE – These are not the world champion Royals you are looking for. Instead, you’ve got a team that has begun their second half with a .263 wOBA and a .270 slugging percentage. They’re also striking out a little more than 20% of the time against right-handed pitching this year.

Kevin Gausman, BAL – Against the Yankees this year, Gausman has allowed just one run over 14 innings with a 9:2 K:BB. While the strikeouts aren’t exactly to die for, he’s done an outstanding job keeping the Bombers’ bats in check and as he does it again, the Orioles will be teeing off on Ivan Nova which should hand Gausman the W at the end.

Matt Wisler, ATL – He’s obviously not a guy I like to put my trust into, but for a GPP and with the way the Reds have been “hitting” the ball this season, I feel like you almost HAVE to give him a look. The Reds have a .295 wOBA with a 22.3-percent strikeout rate against righties for the season and they’ve opened the second half quietly with a .260 wOBA and a .274 slugging percentage.

Mike Leake, STL – Yup, more picking on the Padres. Funny enough, the Pods have come out for the second half with some big bats, but they’re still fanning a little more than 24-percent of the time. As a result, I’m staying more focused on the fact that they still have a 29th-ranked .290 wOBA against right-handers this season.

Brandon Finnegan, CIN – Well, if you’re going to try out Wisler, then of course you have to give a look to Finnegan. His strikeout totals this year have been disappointing in comparison to his numbers late last season, but the Braves, who have a second-half start that displays a .288 wOBA with a .063 ISO, are still one of the worst teams against southpaws this season. We’re talking a .281 wOBA with a .104 ISO and a depressing .641 OPS.
