Kind of an interesting day today as the full slate doesn’t really bring us too many decent match-ups, in my opinion. Actually, let me qualify that. I don’t really like paying up for starters today. Top guys like Stephen Strasburg, Carlos Carrasco and Francisco Liriano each have tougher match-ups than I would like if I’m going to make the investment. What’s worse is that I’m sitting here singing the praises of clubs like San Diego, Seattle and Miami. A week ago and we’d be licking our chops, but if you look at the overall numbers and the numbers over the last several days, you’ll see that these three traditional bottom-feeders are actually hitting very well. It’s not like I think each one of these hurlers is going to get shellacked, but in order to give you a strong return on your investment, they need to go at least seven innings, allow, at the most, three runs and provide you with no less than a strikeout per inning. If any of the teams they were facing had a strikeout rate above 25-percent, then maybe I’d consider. For now, though, I’m looking at some other options.

Vince Velasquez, PHI – There’s no denying that his last start was ridiculous which almost makes me nervous about paying up for him. Nowhere to go but down, really. Still, the Mets have been somewhat inconsistent with the bats and are posting a 24.7-percent strikeout rate against right-handers this year. Velasquez won’t shut them out, but he should control the game and provide you with decent strikeout totals.

Matt Shoemaker, LAA – You may only see average strikeout numbers from Shoemaker as the White Sox have at least maintained some semblance of plate discipline. They’re not producing with the bats but at least they’re not up there hacking away. But the .265 wOBA and the anemic .099 ISO against righties has me on Shoemaker for most of my lineups today. And really, that Draft Kings price?? Oh baby!

Michael Pineda, NYY – The A’s are another offense that may not be victimized by the strikeouts, but with a .268 wOBA and just a 76 wRC+ this season against right-handed pitching, you have to like Pineda in this match-up. He’s given up a few too many home runs, but there are very few concerns with this A’s lineup.

Alex Wood, LAD – Yes, that’s right. Time to pick on those poor, hapless Braves once again. And rightfully so. They’re striking out 23.7-percent of the time against southpaws and rank dead last in such categories as wOBA (.187), ISO (.034) and wRC+ which is a ridiculously pathetic 18. No really….18!!

Ervin Santana, MIN – If you’re playing the full-day slate on FanDuel or Draft Kings, Santana deserves a look as he faces a Brewers lineup that is struggling to find consistent production with the bats and is striking out 26.3-percent of the time against righties. He’s a little pricey on Draft Kings but looks like a sweet bargain on FanDuel.

Logan Verrett, NYM – He’s going to have to outduel Velasquez in order to grab the win, but he definitely stands a chance against that Phillies offense. They’re striking out 22.6-percent of the time against righties and own just a .286 wOBA against them this season. He’s a GPP dart, really.

Mat Latos, CHW – Maybe it’s the fact that there’s little to no run support to be had, but based on the way he’s pitched this season, Latos deserves a look in tournaments today. I still like Shoemaker more in this match-up, but the Halos have also been very quiet with the bats this season. Despite names like Mike Trout and Albert Pujols, the Angels offense is a mess with a .250 wOBA and just a .073 ISO against right-handed pitching.

Shane Greene, DET – You want a dart for the day? Here’s a nice one to try out. The Royals are fanning an uncharacteristic 20.3-percent of the time against righties, they’re posting just a .276 wOBA and have you seen that .112 ISO mark? None of these bats are scaring anyone, especially in a pitcher-friendly park like Kaufman.
