Welcome to Opening Day, 2013, as Major League Baseball is finally a rockin'. All season long I'll be giving you a helping hand breaking down players, letting you know whether you should be buying or selling in the fantasy baseball game, so there's no time like the present to jump into the mix and start making that happen. So sit back, grab that beer, crank up the volume on the game, and give the following article a read. Come on, there's no way you're paying attention to work today... we all know that.1: The number of months that Derek Jeter might miss because of his ankle issues. Jeter is likely about 10 or so days away from being cleared to ramp up his physical activities, and then he'll have to get in baseball shape and play some games to get his swing down. Bottom line – he could be out until the last week of April or the first week of May. That means he may have a tough time playing 130 games this season. The last time he failed to play that many contests was 2003 when he appeared in 119 games. In fact, dating back to 1996, that's the only time he has failed to appear in 130 games.2: The number of ding dongs that Bryce Harper hit on Opening Day to become the youngest player in the live ball era to do that. The kid is legit. The ball simply flies off his bat, and though he swings very hard, it's a controlled hack. Maybe those who predicted a massive breakout this season, I'm talking a 30/30 type effort, aren't as wrong as some would lead you to believe (40/20 might be a better target set, but if he were to approach either mark no one would be complaining).2: The number of hits that Jeff Samardzija allowed in eight shutout innings against the Pirates. He was pumping 95+ mph cheese in the 8th inning as he started 2013 just like he ended 2012.2: The number of triples that Justin Maxwell hit in the Astros first game as a member of the American League. Maxwell is probably a hot waiver-wire add, everyone loves to take one game out of context and think it's the “truth,” but in this case there might be some 'truth' to the matter. I pushed Maxwell as a solid option as a 6th OF type this spring, and through one game that call looked good. I, and many others, have compared him to Chris Young of the Athletics. What that means it that Maxwell is a 20/20 talent that may have a hard time being much better than a league average performer in the batting average category. Don't take my word for it, just look at the numbers. In 537 career at-bats he has gone deep 27 times with 81 RBIs and 82 steals. He's also stolen 20 bases. As for the average, it's a mere .220. That's what happens when you have a K-rate of 32 percent which equates to 197 punchouts in just 537 at-bats. And you thought Adan Dunn has trouble making contact. There's risk with Maxwell, but there's also a nice fantasy game if you come up with a work around for that batting average.2: The amount of runs that Jonathon Niese gave up in his six innings against the Padres. He's going to be a solid hurler this year, even if the hoopla for him during draft season was pretty muted.7: The amount of strikeouts that Jon Lester piled up against the Yankees in five innings. Lester looked much better than he did for most of last season as he allowed two runs while walking just two batters. A prime bounce back candidate on the hill, Lester out pitched C.C. Sabathia who allowed eight hits, walked four batters, and permitted four runs in his eight innings. Sabathia also had a hard time jacking up the mph Monday, and if his heater is done 3-5 mph like it was for much of the outing with the Red Sox, we may see a decline in his K-rate this season (pundits will tell you he is still building up arm strength after some arm woes).21: The most outs that Stephen Strasburg has recorded in a game after he was pulled after 80 pitches in seven shutout innings on Opening Day. That's 46 starts and not a single effort of 7.1 innings. I know it's Opening Day and all, but really Nationals? This is exactly the type of situation that has me very nervous about Strasburg in terms of him living up to his draft day cost. People were taking this guy in the top-25 in most drafts this season, sometimes in the top-10, and while I always think it's not a good idea to go starting pitchers are the top of the draft, I just can't understand why some people would take that pitcher in the first or second round, and make that guy a hurler who has never thrown 160 innings. Strasburg might be great but he's going to have to be an A+ hurler this season to outperform guys like Clayton Kershaw and Justin Verlander if he's throwing 190 innings and those other guys are going over 230. Just saying.245: The listed playing weight of the Giants rotund third baseman Pablo Sandoval. If he is within 30 lbs of that I would be surprised. I'm serious about that. On the plus side Pablo is in the Giants' Opening Day lineup after there being some doubt because of a wonky elbow that limited him in spring. There will always be issues surrounding the Panda's fitness level and dedication, he's been limited to less than 120 games each of the past two seasons, but no one can say the man doesn't know how to hit. Per 162 games in his career he's hit .303 with 22 homers, 88 RBI, 79 runs scored an a .844 OPS.No joke... “Ballpark to debut 'urinal gaming system' in Pa.”DID YOU KNOW...?Norichika Aoki had a better batting average than Josh Hamilton (.288 to .285).Corey Hart and Jason Kubel had as many homers as Albert Pujols (30).Garrett Jones had as many RBIs as Giancarlo Stanton (86).Marco Scutaro scored more runs than Jose Reyes (87 to 86).Dee Gordon stole more bases than Desmond Jennings (32 to 31).Phil Hughes won more games than Stephen Strasburg (16 to 15).Jonathon Niese had a better ERA than James Shields (3.40 to 3.52).Mike Minor had a better WHIP than Jordan Zimmerman (1.15 to 1.17).Edinson Volquez had more Ks than Johnny Cueto (174 to 170).John Axford had more saves than Brian Wilson, Heath Bell, Mariano Rivera, Drew Storen and Ryan Madson... combined (35 to 29)THIS DATE IN BASEBALL HISTORY...April 1, 1997: The Padres scored 11 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as they defeated the Mets 12-5. That is the most runs scored by a team in one inning, on Opening Day, in the 21st century.Ray Flowers can be heard daily on Sirius/XM Radio on The Fantasy Drive on Sirius 210 and XM 87, Monday through Friday at 5 PM EDT.
