Happy Thursday everyone! You know what that means! More Boom Fantasy breakdown! It’s an exciting time now that football is back, but since it’s just the season’s first preseason game, we’re still going to breakdown the MLB Main Slate.
Tonight’s contest begins with a question about the player that will post more hits between Xander Bogaerts, the favorite, and Andrew McCutchen. It’s hard to have much confidence in the Red Sox shortstop right now as he’s in a major slump, going 5-for-35 over his past eight games. McCutchen on the other hand has been on fire, belting four home runs over his last five games alone.
Question two continues talking hits, but they expanded their player pool to four players. The players are Jose Ramirez, Didi Gregorius, Jose Abreu and Eugenio Suarez.
Ramirez is a clubhouse favorite, but hasn’t done well against Yankees starter Sonny Gray in the past going just 2-for-12 against him. Gregorius is a tough man to trust in a matchup with Corey Kluber who’s arguably the game’s best pitcher right now, while Abreu probably has the best matchup of the bunch against Rick Porcello who’s allowing a 39-percent hard contact rate to right-handed hitters. Suarez is a shot in the dark but he’s much better against left-handed pitching and Chad Kuhl is a righty, as we know.
Moving right along, we’re onto question three. Question three asks us who will have the most RBI between Jonathan Schoop, Adam Duvall, Mookie Betts and Jackie Bradley Jr. Schoop is scorching hot of late, driving in at least one run in seven of his last 10 games and nine total. Duvall sits in eighth in the NL in RBI and gets a nice matchup against Chad Kuhl who struggles versus LHH. Both Boston outfielders are definitely the underdogs as Betts comes in 3-for-17 against White Sox starter Miguel Gonzalez while Jackie Bradley has the fewest RBI of the group by a wide margin.
The player cards were shuffled for the next question but it is still about driving in runs. For this question we get the likes of Joey Votto, Justin Upton, Adam Jones and Jordy Mercer. Upton definitely has the best matchup of the bunch, as he will square off against Chris Tillman who’s allowed a .344 batting average to his opposition. Adam Jones has struggled mightily against southpaws on the year hitting just .232 while driving in just 11 of his 52 RBI. Mercer has just one RBI over his past seven games so he’s definitely a hard person to put your money on in this situation.
Aaron Judge is the focus of Boom’s fifth question as it asks us how many extra-base hits will he have? Judge has really struggled of late, going 4-for-26 over his last seven games. Over that span, he has just two extra-base hits, both leaving the yard for a home run. It doesn’t get any easier for the Yankees rookie on Thursday either as he runs into Corey Kluber. We already mentioned above Kluber’s been one of the best pitchers in baseball and we meant it. Temper your expectations with this question!
We shift from extra-bases to total bases for Question six and we also shift from Aaron Judge to Edwin Encarnacion. Encarnacion has really struggled of late and has a tough matchup against Yankees starter Sonny Gray. EE is 5-for-21 off of Gray during his career, so BVP doesn’t back him either. He does get a boost playing at home, however, as his batting average at home is 32 points higher than it is on the road.
Unfortunately for us, Questions seven AND eight will not count tonight. The reason they will not count is because the two pitchers mentioned are not pitching. They were originally supposed to start, but since the Red Sox and Indians were rained out on Wednesday, the two original starts Corey Kluber and Rick Porcello were pushed back to Thursday, ultimately pushing Danny Salazar and Eduardo Rodriguez back to Friday. So no matter what answer you give, they will not count.
