Thursday means Boom’s day! We’re here to break down Boom Fantasy’s Thursday main slate starting at 7:05 PM!
Kicking things off we’re asked about who will have more hits between Cesar Hernandez and Michael Conforto. Hernandez is the favorite, and maybe for good reason, as he’s currently riding a 13-game hit streak with at least one hit in 16-of-17 contests. Conforto, on the other hand, is hitting .217 over the last seven days, a span of six games. That said, Conforto has the more favorable matchup as he’s had his way with Phillies starter Vince Velasquez, going 4-for-7 with two homers. Ride the hot hand? Or believe in the
BVP? Decisions, decisions.
We continue on with talking about hits in question two, this time with four players. DiDi Gregorius is the favorite, followed by Anthony Rendon, Dee Gordon and Kendrys Morales. Gregorius has been on fire of late, posting five multi-hit games over his last eight contests. Nats manager Dusty Baker has already made it known Rendon will get Thursday off as he’s battled illness. Gordon has had his way with Tanner Roark in the past going 7-for-18 off of him, while Morales is just 2-for-18 off of Yanks starter Sonny Gray.
Question three moves on to RBI, and it involves Marcell Ozuna, Bryce Harper, Giancarlo Stanton and Freddie Galvis. Ozuna, Harper and Stanton are fourth through sixth in the NL RBI race. Galvis is an incredible long shot and although he’s 6-for-19 off of deGrom in his career, he has no RBI against him. Stanton has been a one-man wrecking crew of late himself, belting five homers and driving in nine runs over the last seven days. That would a nice way to go if you’re looking to get the most points possible.
Same question, new cycle of players for question four. Boom has made the struggling Aaron Judge the favorite. He may be struggling, but with one swing of the bat he can clear the bases, hence the reason he’s fourth in the AL in RBI. Ryan Zimmerman is coming off a two-homerun night in which he also drove in five runs. Yelich has slumped of late and hasn’t been producing many runs; just three over the last nine games. Donaldson has begun to pick it up and has driven in 11 runs over the past eight games. That is a great contrarian option if you’re taken a lot of the other questions favorites.
For question five we’re asked how many extra-base hits Justin Smoak will have on Thursday. Smoak has struggled mightily against Yankees starter Sonny Gray going 2-for-20 against him in the past, both hits being singles. Smoak has struggled in general of late, not just against Gray. He’s 3-for-20 with just two extra-base hits and 10 strikeouts over his last five contests. As one more tidbit of knowledge is that Smoak hits significantly better against left-handed pitching than right and as we mentioned he’s facing Sonny Gray, a righty.
How many extra-bases will Bryce Harper have on Thursday is what we’re being asked for question six. Harper has not fared well against Marlins starter Dan Straily in the past, so this is a tough one to gauge. Harper’s been really good of late, hitting .375 over the past seven days including two homeruns. Harper’s done a boatload of damage against right-handed arms this year as his OPS is well north of 1.000 at 1.134.
The final two questions ask us about pitching and how many strikeouts each pitcher will have. First we have Sonny Gray who struck out six over six innings in his Yankees debut. Gray’s been tallying up the K’s of late, mowing down 21 opponents over his previous 18.1 innings. Toronto has struck out at a 20.6-percent rate versus right-handers, which is below average. Gray, however, faced the Jays on July 25th and was able to mow down nine opponents via the K so it’s definitely plausible to think he could do it again. Secondly we have the other New York pitcher, Jacob deGrom. deGrom has struck out eight or more in four of his last five starts and now gets a nice matchup against the Phillies who rank sixth in strikeout percentage against right-handed pitching in the league. We could be looking at a double-digit strikeout performance from deGrom in this one.
