Let’s preface this by saying this Mike Trout news sucks. As everyone knows by now, we’re going to be without the games best player for an extended period of time. This is not good in real life and definitely awful news for Trout owners. Good thing this awesome Fantasy site we know writes a column twice a week about players to pick up in case something like this were to happen…wink, wink, wink.

10-team leagues

Matt Holliday, NYY OF, 1B (65% ownership), FAAB Bid - $16 – Let’s not harp on his mediocre .257 average because the peripheral numbers are good. There’s a reason why the 37-year old has had a resurgent season and is second in RBI in the middle of one of the best offenses in baseball; hitting with RISP. Make sure you’re sitting down for this one, because Holliday is slugging .917 with RISP and has posted an 1.354 OPS in the same situations. Holliday’s a great addition if you just lost Mike Trout, but he’s multi-position eligible which is also a major bonus.

Koda Glover, WASH RP (61% ownership), FAAB Bid - $20 – We had Glover in one of our pieces earlier this season as a speculative add when the team was closing by committee. Now, however, we’re telling you he’s a must own. He hasn’t allowed a run since April 25, which is a span of eight appearances picking up four saves. Right-handers have had virtually no chance against Glover this year, posting an .031 Well-Hit Average against him which is first among all RP. Glover seems poised to stay in the ninth inning role for the long haul.

Domingo Santana, MIL OF (40% ownership), FAAB Bid - $14-16 – We’ve never ever started a conversation about Santana talking about lack of talent, but how he can’t seemingly stay healthy. Now healthy, Santana looks like a top-50 fantasy talent by years end. He’s a multi-category contributor has he’s hit eight homers, swiped four bags, driven in 27 runs and scored 27 times himself. He’s posted an .923 OPS, .399 wOBA and an .473 BABIP in the month of May alone. IF – which is obviously the key – he stays healthy, he should be owned in all formats.

12-team leagues

Hunter Renfroe, SD OF (30% ownership), FAAB Bid - $15 – Renfroe didn’t get off to very good start this year but he’s turned it on in May. Comparing all his numbers from April to May shows the young Padre is really trending in the right direction. His April wOBA was .264 compared to .378 in May. He’s also showing some patience at the dish as his 1.9-percemt BB rate from April has gone up to 7.8-percent on the year thanks to his 13.9-percent mark in May. He also has a 35-percent hard-contact mark this campaign, so we should continue to see balls fly out of the park like we did when he was in the minors.

Melky Cabrera, CWS OF (38% ownership), FAAB Bid - $11-13 – If you’ve noticed a trend over the past couple of write-ups, we’ve talked about a bunch of White Sox. There’s reason to the madness, however, as all of them are peaking at the same time. Over the last seven days Cabrera is sizzling like freshly cooked bacon in the morning. He’s slashed .407/.467/.852 with an OPS north of 1.30. Over that same period of time he’s really driving the ball, mashing four homers and driving in 11 runs. As long as he is continuously put in juicy spots in the lineup, the chance of sustained production is high. We’ve seen it before, so this isn’t new territory.

Matt Davidson, CWS 3B (7% ownership), FAAB Bid - $7-9 – There are a lot of things working in Davidson’s corner and they’re very favorable towards you picking him up now and keeping him for the long haul. First and foremost, he’s nearly 1B eligible, which helps his stock right off the bat. Secondly, it’s almost a shoe in that the White Sox unload anybody they can at the deadline that’s making a bunch of money, aka Todd Frazier, which likely means Davidson slots in full-time at 3B. He’s also produced ON the field, blasting 10 home runs in 123 at-bats, which has helped his slugging percentage balloon to .545. If he were qualified, he’d rank top-10 in SLG. His .888 OPS would also rank top-10, as Davidson is just pounding baseballs. He’s a lesser-known option to think about that should see ample playing time going forward, especially if he continues to rake.

15-team leagues

Brad Peacock, HOU SP, RP (34% ownership), FAAB Bid - $7 – So he’s still transitioning from a reliever to a starter, but Peacock is slotting in nicely as a SP. He hasn’t pitched five innings in a start yet, but has back-to-back eight strikeout contests. Peacock is 29, so he’s been around the block, and has been a starter before as he’s logged 247 innings as a SP during his career. Let us point out that Peacock leads ALL qualified starters with a 45.7 strikeout rate, which plays in every format out there.

Jharel Cotton, OAK SP (22% ownership), FAAB Bid - $5-7 – It was just one start, but maybe his last demotion taught him well as he navigated through a tough Yankees lineup to pick up a win last time out. The 25-year old doesn’t have many things working in his favor, but he does an 11.34 K/9 and a 30-percent K-rate in the month of May. Another silver lining is he’s been excellent on the road. Opposing hitters are hitting just .200 against him on the road and have posted a measly .298 wOBA. Things should balance out on the home/road splits seeing how pitcher-friendly his home park in Oakland is. The former top prospect is worth taking a flier on in deeper formats.
