Los Angeles Angels vs. Milwaukee Brewers Predictions: Thursday, September 18th

The Brewers have taken the first two games of this week’s series against the Angels, both by a 9-2 scoreline. Milwaukee will go for the sweep today as they get one step closer to clinching the NL Central and the league’s top seed. The home squad has a few notable edges in its favor for Thursday night.

Milwaukee starter Quinn Priester has been pitching very well for months now. He owns a 2.25 ERA over his past 5 starts and a 2.81 ERA over his past 11 outings. Plus, the right-hander has allowed 2 or fewer earned runs in 15 of his last 19 appearances. That’s a 2.75 ERA in this stretch since May 24th.

Furthermore, the Brewers have been literally unbeatable when Priester toes the rubber these days. In fact, Milwaukee has now won 18 straight games in which the righty has pitched. Maybe this streak ends at some point, but Priester’s current form suggests otherwise.

Today, he’ll face a slumping Los Angeles offense that’s averaging 2.0 runs per game over the past 5 contests. The Angels are currently struggling against right-handed pitching. In September vs. righties, they have a .204 BA (29th in MLB), .279 wOBA (27th), 75 wRC+ (27th), and 32.9% strikeout rate (30th). LA’s lineup is also batting just .169 with a 39.6% K rate in the split over the past week.

Meanwhile, Angels starter Yusei Kikuchi brings in a 4.08 ERA and 1.46 WHIP this season. The veteran southpaw has been getting lit up lately. He has an ugly 7.49 ERA over his past 7 starts and a 6.06 ERA over his past 13 outings.

Kikuchi has notably struggled on the road recently. He has a 7.30 ERA over his past 5 road starts, including 4+ runs allowed in 4 of those 5 outings. Overall, the lefty has a 5.16 ERA away from Los Angeles this season. He’ll now face a dangerous Brewers lineup with good numbers vs. left-handers over the past two weeks (.284 BA, .327 wOBA, 112 wRC+).

Back the Brewers on the runline for the full game and first five innings. The Angels have lost 6 straight coming into today, and they’re 3-10 over the past 13 games. Milwaukee is 4-1 over the last 5 games and heating back up again.

Miami Marlins vs. Colorado Rockies Predictions: Thursday, September 18th

It’s always scary to root for lower-scoring games in Coors Field, but that’s exactly what we’re doing today. The starting pitching matchup and some recent offensive splits point us in that direction as the Rockies host the Marlins on Thursday afternoon.

Sandy Alcantara has been pitching well for Miami lately. The former Cy Young winner owns a 2.48 ERA over his past 6 starts, with a 41:6 K:BB ratio in this stretch. He also owns a solid 3.09 ERA over his past 10 outings, with 2 or fewer runs allowed in 7 of those.

The Marlins’ right-hander is finally rounding into form after a shaky up-and-down season. It’s also notable that Alcantara’s 4.19 FIP and 4.25 xFIP suggest more positive regression is coming to his current 5.53 season-long ERA. Today, he’ll face a Rockies offense that has a .273 wOBA and 59 wRC+ vs. righties in September (both 29th in MLB).

Meanwhile, Colorado starter Tanner Gordon can also be effective in his own matchup. The right-hander’s 6.14 ERA this season isn’t ideal, but that doesn’t represent how he’s looked over the past month. Gordon has allowed 2 or fewer runs in 4 of his last 5 starts coming in. This stretch includes quality starts against the Dodgers, Astros, Padres, and Cubs.

Gordon can keep it going today. The Marlins are also a bottom-tier offense vs. righties this month, with a .282 wOBA (26th in MLB), 77 wRC+ (26th), and .228 BA (23rd). It’s a good spot for Gordon, who can take advantage of the easier matchup.

Trust Alcantara and Gordon to hold things down for the under in the first five innings. Let’s also hope the bullpens cash the full-game under. The afternoon start time can also lead to some quiet bats early on.
