The Honda Classic lived up the billing of a tough golf course except for Matt Jones who lit it up finishing twelve under par for the week.  It’s only the second time in the last nine Hondas that the winner finished double digits under par.  When you have a field like the one we saw last week, it’s really hard to predict which guys will step up.  I was glad to see Russell Henley and Brendan Steele step up and finish in the Top 10.  Lee Westwood looked like he was going to have another stellar week on Thursday before shooting a 79 on Friday to miss the cut.  Shane Lowry played fantastic Thursday and Friday and fell apart over the weekend.  Overall, a very up and down week for the playbook but we’ve got another event this week but we finally leave Florida and head to the Dominican Republic for the Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship.

As I’ve mentioned a few times before, the cream of the crop on the PGA Tour were invited to play in the WGC-Match Play and everyone else heads to the Dominican Republic for the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship.  Your top priced player on the board is a four time winner on the European Tour but has yet to cash in on the PGA Tour, Thomas Pieters.  He did play his college golf at the University of Illinois.  Throughout the 10K and 9K salaries, you’ve got guys who would typically be in the 7K & 6K range.  We've got players from the Korn Ferry Tour and the European Tour participating this weekend, a lot of whom you don't get to see on a regular basis.  I'm sure some of these guys use this event as a work/vacation in the Dominican, I’m sure a few of them would rather take the week off.

So, let’s take a look at the Corales Golf Club which is a basic stock par 72 that opened in 2010.  The course is long reaching nearly 7,700 yards, both the par 5s can stretch beyond 620 yards.  The last five winners of this event; Dominic Bozzelli, Nate Lashley, Brice Garnett, Graeme McDowell, and Hudson Swafford are all in the field this weekend.  Lashley has a lot of experience on this course having competed in at least one of the two editions that the Korn Ferry Tour hosted on this track. The greens are just about 11 feet on the Stimpmeter which doesn’t pose much of a challenge for these caliber players which means they can play aggressively.  The primary rough is cut to around two inches but fairways are accommodating, so long hitters and tee-to-green tacticians both will have success on this course.

We love nicknames like the Bear Trap and the Snake Pit for a three hole stretch, well let me introduce you to “The Devil’s Elbow”.  While those other places are known for their difficulty, these three holes (16, 17, and 18) are known for giving players a chance to win down the stretch.

We should not have any weather concerns this week, it'll be partly cloudy with tempertures in the low 80s all weekend long. Winds will slightly pick up over the weekend to 10-12 mph, typical island breezes.  There are definitely players who know how to play in these conditions better than others.

ONE AND DONE PICK: Chase Seiffert

GOOD LUCK!
